Sofia Richie Grainge is sharing her honest experiences during her pregnancy.

The daughter of music icon Lionel Richie discussed her journey with Dr. Thais Aliabadi and women’s health advocate Mary Alice Haney on the “She MD” podcast, with the episode released on Tuesday.

“I had a wonderful pregnancy until around the 32-week mark,” she revealed to the hosts. Richie Grainge, 26, announced the arrival of her daughter Eloise, with music executive Elliot Grainge, in an Instagram post on May 24.

However, Grainge recounted that she “woke up one morning” feeling “really tired” with back pain and cramps. She initially thought it was just typical pregnancy discomfort and expected guidance like, ‘You’ll be fine, but come in if you want.’

Instead, she received a suggestion to see a fetal specialist for monitoring. “Thank goodness she said that,” she remarked.

She described the experience as “terrifying,” expressing that she was “begging” to be able to go home but was ultimately ordered to rest at home, noting it felt like a “waiting game” as contractions continued.

Despite the initial crisis, Grainge reached 38 weeks and opted to induce labor then. She praised her “fantastic delivery,” sharing that Aliabadi, who she affectionately refers to as “Dr. A,” acted like a “football coach” during the process.

After bringing her daughter into the world, Grainge experienced significant swelling and was diagnosed with postpartum preeclampsia.

She recounted that leaving her daughter just two days after giving birth was one of the hardest challenges she faced. “My husband had to take me to the hospital because Dr. A insisted it wasn’t safe for me to stay home. I spent 24 hours there, and it was incredibly tough,” she expressed.

According to the Mayo Clinic, postpartum preeclampsia is a rare condition characterized by high blood pressure and excess protein in urine shortly after childbirth. If not treated, it can lead to severe complications, including seizures.
