Coach Steve Kerr shows support for Kamala Harris as President and tells Donald Trump to say ‘goodnight’
Steve Kerr, the head coach of the Golden State Warriors, has officially backed Kamala Harris for President of the United States. His endorsement included a memorable reference to the team’s star, Steph Curry.
“Once the votes are counted on Nov. 5, as the iconic Steph Curry says, we can say to Donald Trump, night night!” Kerr remarked during his speech at the Democratic National Convention on Monday, recalling Curry’s famous three-point celebration.
Kerr appeared on the first day of the Democratic National Convention at the United Center, the arena of the Chicago Bulls, where he celebrated five NBA championships (1996-1999, 2003) and recently guided the U.S. men’s basketball team to their fifth straight gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
“Many incredible memories were made here (at the United Center), especially in the ’90s. For those of you who are younger, Google ‘Michael Jordan’ to learn more about it,” Kerr joked. “The atmosphere back then was amazing, and I feel that same winning spirit tonight.”
Kerr acknowledged the potential backlash he might face for participating in a political event, stating, “I can already imagine the tweets saying ‘just stick to basketball’.” Nevertheless, the 58-year-old emphasized that the upcoming election is “too crucial for me as an American to stay silent.”
“As a coach and former player. I uphold certain principles of leadership,” Kerr stated. “I believe leaders should exhibit dignity, honesty, and the ability to laugh at themselves. They’re expected to care for the people they lead and possess a balance of logic and know-how, without pretending to have all the answers. In fact, some of the most valuable insights come from the team members themselves.”
Kerr sees these qualities in both Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
“I can’t think of a more fitting symbol of our country’s essence than how Team USA united at the Olympics. We had players from all across our amazing nation coming together to don the red, white, and blue,” Kerr expressed. “The joy, compassion, and dedication we witnessed during the Olympics represents what Kamala Harris and Tim Walz embody, and it’s what our country truly needs: genuine leadership. Not the divisive kind, but the type that honors and celebrates our shared purpose.”
Just last month, Harris joined Kerr and the U.S. men’s national basketball team during a practice session in Las Vegas before they headed off to the Olympics in Paris. Kerr remarked that her visit was “a wonderful reminder of the fact that we’re representing our country, and Vice President Harris was fantastic.”
