The-Dream labels sexual battery lawsuit as ‘character assassination,’ refutes allegations
The-Dream, a Grammy-winning artist, is firmly denying allegations made in a lawsuit by a woman who claims he “lured” her into an “abusive, violent, and manipulative” relationship.
Attorneys for the 46-year-old musician, whose real name is Terius Gesteelde-Diamant, submitted a motion to dismiss in a California federal court, asserting his complete denial of any allegations of sexual misconduct or violence.
Chanaaz Mangroe, aged 33, aka Channii Monroe, filed a lawsuit that Gesteelde-Diamant’s defense termed a “character assassination,” claiming it is filled with irrelevant and misleading accusations throughout its extensive 300 paragraphs.
According to Gesteelde-Diamant’s legal team, the complaint invokes harmful racial stereotypes that he and others have battled throughout their lives.
His lawyers argue that Mangroe is exploiting the judicial system to create a false narrative about him, suggesting that he is among a number of high-profile Black individuals facing similar sexual misconduct lawsuits.
Desirée F. Moore, the defense attorney representing Gesteelde-Diamant and Contra Paris LLC, remarked that Mangroe did not attribute specific allegations against each defendant in her claims.
Moore also indicated that many allegations in Mangroe’s lawsuit have no relevance to her claims of sexual battery and trafficking, aiming instead to tarnish Gesteelde-Diamant’s reputation.
In response to the dismissal request, Mangroe’s attorneys expressed to YSL News that “The Dream’s arguments for dismissing the plaintiff’s claims are completely unconvincing. We are eager to challenge these motions and advance the discovery process in this matter.”
The-Dream describes ‘a brief and consensual courtship’ with accuser
In the defense filing, Gesteelde-Diamant stated that he and Mangroe “engaged in a brief and consensual courtship” without any instances of non-consensual interactions or abuse.
He maintained that Mangroe had pursued him for years, seeking various career-related favors.
Gesteelde-Diamant’s lawyers are requesting the case to be dismissed, claiming it presents a “shotgun pleading,” signifying a mix of allegations that obscure the true nature of claims and impede defendants from responding appropriately. They assert that the allegations do not adequately support a sex-trafficking claim.
Channii Monroe’s accusations against The-Dream
Mangroe’s June complaint outlines a working relationship with The-Dream filled with “physical assaults, violent sexual acts, and intense psychological manipulation,” framed as assistance in her pursuit of recording and publishing contracts with Contra Paris LLC and Epic Records.
She claims to have first met The-Dream when he or his associates reached out to her in 2014, while she was seeking to advance her singing career in the U.S. on a visa from the Netherlands.
Her lawsuit states that Gesteelde-Diamant’s alleged actions “upended” her career, claiming her music was taken without explanation, and she has struggled to recover from the trauma nearly a decade later.
Gesteelde-Diamant, known for his songwriting contributions to hits like Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” and Rihanna’s “Umbrella,” has won eight Grammy awards and received 21 nominations.
