The Grateful Dead to Receive MusiCares Person of the Year Honor During Grammy Week Celebration

The Grateful Dead Named MusiCares Persons of the Year: Upcoming Honors During Grammy Week

The Grateful Dead is set to receive another prestigious recognition as they are named the 2025 MusiCares Persons of the Year.

The iconic San Francisco jam band will be celebrated during the 34th annual benefit concert and tribute event at the Los Angeles Convention Center on January 31, just two nights ahead of the 67th Grammy Awards at Crypto.com Arena. The lineup of artists performing their songs will be revealed closer to the date.

As they mark their 60th anniversary, founding members Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, and Bob Weir will be honored for their musical achievements and charitable contributions.

The night will also pay tribute to Jerry Garcia, the cherished singer and guitarist of the band, who passed away in 1995 but continues to be an iconic figure for fans.

The Grateful Dead, previously awarded the Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007, boasts a loyal fan base that enjoys their varied performances of hits such as “Jack Straw,” “Franklin’s Tower,” “Sugar Magnolia,” and “Uncle John’s Band.”

MusiCares is the charitable division of the Recording Academy, which hosts the Grammy Awards. The foundation offers support services including emergency finances, medical aid, addiction recovery, disaster relief, and treatment for serious illnesses to those in the music industry.

Beyond their music, the Grateful Dead members have made significant contributions to philanthropic efforts in areas like environmental conservation, mental health, and music education. Hart advocates for the benefits of music therapy for brain health, while Weir focuses on climate change and poverty issues. Kreutzmann has long supported ocean conservation initiatives, and Lesh’s Unbroken Chain Foundation has provided funding to non-profits dedicated to music, the environment, and education. Garcia was also actively involved with the Rex Foundation, which champions social services and indigenous rights.

“This recognition truly reflects the legacy of our music, which extends beyond ourselves — it embodies the connections we’ve made with our crew and everyone who has shared in this long, strange journey,” shared Hart, Kreutzmann, Lesh, and Weir in a collective statement. “It’s not only about our creations but also ensuring that those who support us behind the scenes receive the help they need to continue, regardless of life’s challenges. We are thankful to partner with MusiCares and encourage everyone to uphold its crucial mission to ensure that music thrives forever.”

The Grateful Dead becomes part of an illustrious group of artists recognized by MusiCares, including Joni Mitchell, Fleetwood Mac, Dolly Parton, Berry Gordy, Smokey Robinson, and last year’s honoree Jon Bon Jovi.

MusiCares Executive Director Laura Segura expressed, “The Grateful Dead’s legacy goes far beyond music; they’ve fostered a community of fans and collaborators that reflect the spirit of connection and support, aligning perfectly with MusiCares’ mission. Their dedication to the arts and philanthropy, along with their commitment to social issues, has left a timeless impact that reaches beyond performance.”
