This Week’s Trump Chronicles: A Collection of Outlandish Remarks

Opinion: Trump made a lot of bizarre statements this week, so here’s a roundup

As early voting kicks off in numerous states, I urge undecided voters to consider if Donald Trump is the kind of leader they want returning to the White House.

With less than three weeks until the 2024 presidential election, Donald Trump is appearing increasingly erratic. This week, he made numerous shocking comments that would likely damage any other candidate’s campaign, yet he seems to remain unaffected.

In two separate interviews this week – one with Bloomberg and another with Univision – Trump referred to COVID-19 as the “China virus,” claimed we are on the brink of World War III, mispronounced Vice President Kamala Harris’ name, and dismissed the significance of the January 6, 2021, events.

Despite his ongoing blunders and growing disorientation, the former president is polling closely behind the Democratic nominee. ABC News’ 538 forecasts Harris leading Trump by 48.4% to 46.3%.

As early voting is taking place in various states, I encourage undecided voters to reflect on whether this is the kind of leadership they wish to see back in the Oval Office.

Trump dances while supporters faint at a town hall

Trump began the week at a town hall event in Pennsylvania, moderated by South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, where two attendees required medical assistance. His response was to instruct the music to be played “nice and loud.”

For the next 39 minutes, he danced to his favorite songs, which included “Nothing Compares 2 U” by Sinead O’Connor, “Y.M.C.A.” by the Village People, and “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” by James Brown. He exited to “November Rain” by Guns N’ Roses, finishing with “Memory” from the musical “Cats.”

At the age of 78, Trump would set the record as the oldest U.S. president if elected again – a fact that becomes clearer with each passing day. He seems unfazed by this reality.

The following day, discussing his Supreme Court nominees during an interview with Bloomberg at the Economic Club of Chicago, Trump made a comment regarding the age of his appointees.

“You tend to appoint younger ones,” Trump stated. “Only foolish people pick older ones.”

Trump mocks the family of Georgia woman who died due to abortion laws

Just before a Fox News town hall event in Georgia, he made jokes pertaining to the family of Amber Thurman, a 28-year-old woman who passed away after her doctors delayed critical care due to the state’s six-week abortion restriction. To Trump, this was an appropriate subject for humor.

“Amber Thurman’s family is on a press call doing what’s called a prebuttal to our town hall right now,” Fox News host Harris Faulkner told Trump before the event began.

“Oh, that’s lovely,” he replied. “I guarantee we’ll get higher ratings.”

It should not need to be stated, but death is never a subject for jokes.

It becomes even more distasteful considering that the repeal of Roe v. Wade was a result of Trump’s actions – something he has boasted about during his campaign.

Trump claims to be the ‘father of IVF’

Trump has made numerous attempts to rewrite his history regarding abortion rights. At the same Fox News town hall, he also brought up in vitro fertilization, a topic facing scrutiny in the post-Roe landscape.

“I’m the father of IVF, so I’m eager to hear this question,” Trump said when asked about the process. His meaning, however, remains unclear.

Trump expressed prior support for in vitro fertilization following a recent Alabama Supreme Court ruling that threatened its availability. While the Republican Party could take legislative action, a bill to safeguard access to IVF remains stalled in Congress.

Trump continues spreading misinformation and hostility towards immigrants

In an interview with Bloomberg Editor-in-Chief John Micklethwait, Trump reiterated his assertion that a Venezuelan gang has seized control of an apartment building in Aurora, Colorado. This claim has been dismissed by the city’s mayor as “grossly exaggerated.”

On Wednesday, during a town hall meeting for Latino voters organized by Univision, Trump also refused to retract his inaccurate statements regarding Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio, allegedly eating pets.

Trump defended his claims by saying, “I was just saying what was reported, and that included eating other things too, that they’re not supposed to be.”

Such narratives can be damaging to the communities they reference. It is regrettable that Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, are unwilling to apologize for propagating these inaccuracies.

Wherever Trump goes, he tends to make inappropriate remarks. As a nation, we deserve better than an entitled individual who continuously spreads divisive rhetoric.
