Officials reported that one individual has died and nine others sustained injuries following a suspected mass shooting on Tuesday night in a suburban area north of Baltimore.

Police responded to emergency calls about several gunshots around 7:15 p.m. local time in Towson, located approximately 15 miles north of Baltimore, as stated by Baltimore County Police Chief Robert McCullough. Officers found multiple victims at the site of the incident.

The first officer on the scene discovered a vehicle “on its side and ablaze,” McCullough reported during a Tuesday night press briefing. Officers quickly contacted the Baltimore County Fire Department for assistance.

Fire personnel treated the victims and took them to a hospital, as per McCullough’s account. Authorities later confirmed that at least one person lost their life and nine others were hurt.

“It looks like a mass shooting event. We have several people injured from gunfire,” indicated McCullough. “We are investigating the details surrounding this incident.”

Currently, officials are still gathering information and have not identified any potential suspects. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives from the Baltimore Field Division has joined the police in investigating the incident.

McCullough reassured that there was no immediate danger to the public, noting the shooting seemed to be a specific attack on known individuals.

“It gives the impression that those involved in this case had some form of acquaintance and that this event was deliberate and aimed at those specific individuals,” he added.

Burning vehicle discovered near a funeral home

McCullough and Chief Joseph Dixon of the Baltimore County Fire Department noted that the burning vehicle was located near a funeral home. Investigators are examining the vehicle’s connection to the shooting.

“What we understand is that the vehicle appears to have overturned at that spot and caught fire for some reason,” stated McCullough. “We can also confirm that there are multiple bullets that struck the front of the building.”

Investigators are looking into other locations where residents reported additional gunfire in the vicinity, according to McCullough.

Authorities are requesting anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

‘Such incidents are uncommon here’

This shooting is another tragic mass shooting incident that has impacted the nation. It follows a lethal school shooting that occurred in Madison, Wisconsin, just a day prior.

This year alone, there have been 490 mass shooting events in the United States, as reported by the Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit organization that tracks such incidents. They define a mass shooting as any event in which “at least four people are shot, either injured or killed, excluding the shooter.”

“This situation is shocking, especially for us in Baltimore County,” remarked Baltimore County Executive John Olszewski during the press conference. “These kinds of incidents are very rare here, so it truly shakes us to our core… our condolences go out to everyone affected by this violence.”
