Body of Hiker Discovered in Grand Canyon After Flash Floods; Over 100 Rescued by Air

The body of a woman from Arizona was recovered on Sunday following her disappearance during flash floods that affected Grand Canyon National Park.

Chenoa Nickerson, aged 33, was last seen on Thursday just prior to a flash flood hitting Havasu Canyon, nearly 30 miles from Grand Canyon Village, Arizona, as noted in a press release from the National Park Service. She was found 100 yards above the point where Havasu Creek converges with the Colorado River and was not equipped with a life jacket, according to the report.

A commercial river group located Nickerson’s body in the Colorado River three days post her disappearance. Park rangers utilized a helicopter for the retrieval and transportation of her remains, which were subsequently transferred to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s office.

In the three days Nickerson was unaccounted for, the National Park Service executed a comprehensive search and rescue operation.

An investigation is ongoing, led by the National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner.

Nickerson was hiking with her husband during the flash floods and the two ended up being separated. Although her husband was also swept away by the floodwaters, local rafters eventually rescued him, family members informed KPHO-TV.

Reports Indicate Nickerson and Husband Were Swept Away

The couple was visiting from Gilbert, a suburb of Phoenix, and were trekking in the Supai Village region, situated within Havasu Canyon on the Havasupai Indian Reservation.

This locale is a favored destination for tourists drawn by its stunning waterfalls and vibrant blue pools.

Over 100 Individuals Rescued

The evacuation was performed with a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter, as illustrated in the video shared.

This marked the first significant flash flood to impact Havasu Creek in 2024, according to Joelle Baird, a spokesperson for the park service.
