Walmart worker discovered deceased in walk-in oven at Canadian store
Authorities in Canada are looking into the death of a 19-year-old female employee of Walmart, whose body was discovered on Saturday inside the bakery’s large oven.
The Walmart outlet in Halifax, Nova Scotia remains closed following the woman’s death, which was confirmed by Halifax police around 9:30 p.m. local time on Saturday. On Tuesday, police revealed that she was indeed a store employee and was found in the bakery’s walk-in oven.
As of now, investigators have not established the cause or circumstances surrounding her death and have not publicly disclosed her identity. According to a Sikh community leader in Halifax, the deceased was a member of the Sikh community, reported CBC.
“This investigation is complicated and requires cooperation with several agencies,” stated the Halifax police. “An inquiry of this nature can take a considerable amount of time.”
Walmart in Canada remains shut down during death probe
The Nova Scotia Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration has confirmed in a statement to YSL News that a stop-work order was issued on Tuesday for the bakery department and one specific equipment at the Walmart location.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the employee’s family during this incredibly challenging time,” the department stated. “Since this is an ongoing investigation, we are unable to provide additional information at this moment. Please be aware that workplace investigations are intricate and require time.”
A Walmart representative, Amanda Moss, informed YSL News that the store will stay closed until further announcements are made concerning the investigation. Several news sources reported that the company is offering 24/7 virtual healthcare access to its employees, along with on-site assistance, including counseling for grief.
“We are devastated, and our deepest thoughts are with our associate and their family,” Moss commented in a statement. “Our priority is to support our associates and ensure they have the help they need.”
