Tua Tagovailoa concussion timeline: Dolphins QB exits game against Bills with head injury

During the Thursday NFL game between the Miami Dolphins and the Buffalo Bills, Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa had to leave the field after suffering a concerning hit to the head in the third quarter.

In his fifth year with the team, Tagovailoa ran for a first down on a critical fourth-and-four play late in the third quarter when his helmet collided with the shoulder pads of Bills defensive back Damar Hamlin. He remained on the ground for some time before getting up and walking off the field on his own to head to the locker room.

At the moment of his injury, the Dolphins were behind the Bills 31-10, and Tagovailoa had completed 17 of 25 passes for 145 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions, including a pick-six in the same quarter.

In the offseason, Tagovailoa signed a lucrative four-year contract extension worth $212.4 million, and he has had several head injuries throughout his career.

How many concussions has Tua Tagovailoa had? Injury timeline

Tagovailoa, who sustained a head injury during the “Thursday Night Football” game against the Bills, has now had three concussions in his NFL career, with his latest injury marking the third.

The first confirmed concussion of Tagovailoa’s NFL career occurred in the 2022 season during a troubling moment on “Thursday Night Football” against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 4. This injury followed an earlier incident where he had fallen hard against the Bills just four days prior. That fall was initially believed to be a head injury but was later identified as a back problem after Tagovailoa returned to play against the Bills in Week 3.

This incident led to the NFL Players Association dismissing the independent neurologist who cleared Tagovailoa to return to the game in the second half of the Week 3 match.

Tagovailoa also experienced another concussion in Week 16 against the Green Bay Packers, causing him to miss the last two games of that season, including a playoff game. He returned to face the Packers in the second half, throwing three interceptions in that game. The concussion was only identified post-game.

It is uncertain whether he had any concussions prior to his college days at Alabama.
