Tyreek Hill Takes a Stand: A Star Athlete’s Journey into Police Reform Advocacy

Miami Dolphins star Tyreek Hill advocates for police reform after being detained

Tyreek Hill, a receiver for the Miami Dolphins, who faced police detainment prior to an NFL game this month, has enlisted three attorneys. Among them are a former federal prosecutor and a civil rights lawyer known for handling significant cases, including that of George Floyd, to support his legal challenge against the Miami-Dade Police Department.

In a statement issued by his attorney, Julius B. Collins from Atlanta, Hill proclaimed that he aims to represent all individuals in the overarching struggle against national police misconduct.

“Hill is determined that his legal team will amplify the voices of those who have been overlooked or silenced regarding police reform,” Collins continued.

Hill’s legal representation includes Jeffrey A. Neiman, a former federal prosecutor from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Stephen B. Kelly, Jr. from Jacksonville’s Rolle & Kelly, and prominent civil rights attorney Devon M. Jacob from Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. Jacob has been part of numerous significant civil rights cases across the nation, such as Floyd, Kodak Black (Bill Kapri), Hunter Brittain, Pamela Turner, Christian Hall, Emantic “EJ” Bradford, and Eboni Pouncy.

The Miami-Dade Police Department confirmed that officer Danny Torres was reassigned to administrative duties following the incident on September 8, where police body video demonstrated that Hill was forcibly taken from his vehicle and handcuffed. Records obtained by YSL News Sports reveal that Torres had been suspended six times in 28 years of service.

“It’s evident that Miami-Dade County should have terminated Officer Torres long before this incident. Instead, he was repeatedly allowed to remain in a position where he could misuse his police powers against individuals,” Neiman stated.

“Had the officers not recognized they were dealing with Tyreek Hill – a prominent, respected, and seemingly affluent Black man – this traffic stop would likely have concluded with the driver being arrested, hospitalized, or, in a tragic case like George Floyd, dead,” Collins further remarked.

“Tyreek plans to continue advocating for the necessary policing changes sparked by George Floyd’s tragic death,” Jacob said. “He is calling on Congress to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act as a priority.”

According to police reports, Hill was driving at about 60 mph at the time. He received citations for careless driving and not wearing a seatbelt, with a court appearance scheduled for October 11 for these violations. Hill does not need to appear personally and will be represented by Miami-based attorney Adam Goodman for the traffic matters.

Torres’ attorneys, Ignacio Alvarez and Israel Reyes, called for the officer’s immediate reinstatement in a news release dated September 11.
