Relocating Abroad Can Be Costly: These 5 Nations Will ‘Compensate’ You for Moving

If the thought of relocating to a foreign country feels like a fantasy, you’re in good fortune.

While moving abroad can be a challenging and often pricey endeavor, many countries have introduced appealing programs that provide financial incentives to newcomers. Recently, initiatives like grants for settling in Tuscan villages and Mediterranean islands offering homes for the cost of a coffee have created exciting prospects for those looking to start a new life abroad. For many Americans craving a break from their routine, these opportunities may present a welcome escape.

It’s important to clarify that those selected for these initiatives are not simply receiving money to live there; instead, they are offered funding as part of the requirement to move. “Programs that provide financial benefits for relocating abroad, like Italian villages compensating individuals to refurbish old homes or Spanish regions offering grants, are a brilliant idea,” advises Michelle Garabito, an expat and the founder of the relocation community The Lux Nomads. “These programs serve as excellent marketing strategies designed to attract attention and rejuvenate areas that may be sparsely populated or facing economic challenges.”

Despite how appealing these incentives may appear, Garabito cautions potential movers to maintain “realistic expectations” and assess whether their lifestyle fits the objectives of these programs, which typically aim to breathe life into rural, less populated areas. “While these locations are enchanting and scenic, they might lack the conveniences and infrastructure familiar to some expats,” she noted. Exploring options like a digital nomad visa could be a more pragmatic route.

Furthermore, many of these programs are very selective and impose strict criteria, meaning only a limited number of applicants may qualify. Additionally, you may still be required to obtain the necessary residency or visa to legally reside in the country.

“That being said, if someone is genuinely interested in moving abroad, programs like these can serve as a fantastic starting point,” she noted. “They offer a chance to engage with a new culture while possibly reducing costs or contributing to a valuable cause.”

Here’s a look at some countries that will give you financial incentives to relocate there.

Spain

History and wine enthusiasts can benefit from a new initiative in the remote region of Extremadura, which launched in late August. The program offers up to €15,000 (approximately $15,744) for 200 selected digital nomads working in the tech sector who decide to relocate to one of its rural communities for a minimum of two years. The funding is intended to assist expats in expediting their move, particularly in securing housing.

Chile

For those with a love for the outdoors and entrepreneurial aspirations, Chile’s Start-Up program offers grants ranging from 15 million to 75 million Chilean pesos (around $15,150 to $75,750) designed for entrepreneurs looking to establish their start-ups in this South American nation.

Ireland

This year, Ireland introduced the “Our Living Islands” initiative aimed at revitalizing and preserving the life on 30 rural islands located off its western coast. Candidates who qualify can receive up to €84,000 (around $88,179) to renovate abandoned properties. However, moving to these serene locations still necessitates compliance with standard immigration laws.

“With the implementation of this policy, we expect to see an increase in residents on the islands as well as job opportunities, regardless of the location of their employer,” said Heather Humphreys, Minister for Rural and Community Development.

Japan

The Regional Revitalization Corps in Japan has been tackling the problem of rural population decline since 2008. They encourage citizens with international backgrounds to relocate to smaller towns, where they can help invigorate shrinking communities. Participants, who must be fluent in Japanese and adept at integrating into local culture, receive about 3 million yen ($19,514) as an incentive, which can be used to start a local business such as a café.

Italy

In a recent initiative following the U.S. presidential election, the historic town of Ollolai in Sardinia has launched a program known as “Live in Ollolai” for Americans looking to relocate abroad. This charming town is enveloped by tranquil forests, away from Sardinia’s famed coastlines. Although there isn’t direct financial support for moving, the program allows newcomers to purchase homes for as little as €1 (around $1.05), along with guidance on the relocation process.
