James Gunn’s ‘Superman,’ featuring a new Clark Kent and his dog!
Prepare to be amazed by the new DC movie franchise after viewing the trailer for James Gunn’s “Superman.”
The eagerly awaited superhero reboot released its first trailer on Thursday, featuring David Corenswet as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan portraying Lois Lane, Superman’s love interest.
Nicholas Hoult, who is bald in this portrayal, plays the formidable Lex Luthor, a role previously taken on by actors like Gene Hackman, Kevin Spacey, and Jesse Eisenberg.
The trailer opens dramatically with a bloodied Superman crashing into a snowy landscape, where he calls for his dog Krypto, dressed in a red cape, to help him. In contrast, Clark Kent appears quite different as he heads to his job at the Daily Planet alongside Lois Lane.
Throughout the trailer, a bright and optimistic tone prevails, reminiscent of Christopher Reeve’s portrayal, standing contrary to the darker theme popularized by director Zack Snyder. Accompanied by a fresh interpretation of John Williams’ legendary Superman theme, we see Superman saving a young girl, while another scene features a boy holding up a flag displaying Superman’s emblem. Nonetheless, the footage hints at some public backlash against Superman, as he enters a building amid a crowd of angry citizens.
The teaser also suggests the presence of various other heroes, giving us a glimpse of Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, also known as Green Lantern.
“Superman” is set to launch a revamped DC franchise, referred to as the DC Universe. Gunn, who both wrote and directed this film, is also co-CEO of DC Studios with Peter Safran, overseeing all upcoming films and TV projects, including the newly premiered animated series “Creature Commandos.”
The trailer features the tagline “It begins,” alluding to the fresh start of this new era for the DC universe.
‘Superman’ cast: Who stars in this new DC film?
The impressive cast of “Superman” features Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent, and Neva Howell as Martha Kent.
Several other superhero characters are expected to join Superman, including Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), and Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan).
‘Superman’ storyline: What will the movie be about?
In a video shared on Wednesday, Gunn characterized “Superman” as a narrative that explores humanity and the true meaning of heroism in a challenging world.
The reboot is set in a universe “where superheroes exist and have been around for quite some time,” as noted by Gunn on Threads.
While many specifics about the storyline remain under wraps, Gunn has clarified that it won’t serve as an origin story, indicating that Clark Kent is already Superman from the outset. “I won’t be recounting the origins of Batman and Superman because everyone is familiar with them,” Gunn stated on Threads.
Superman’s canine companion, Krypto, will also make an appearance. The character was inspired by Gunn’s own dog, Ozu, whom he adopted during the scriptwriting process.
Gunn shared that Ozu caused chaos upon arriving in his home, destroying furniture and even chewing on his laptop. “It made me wonder how challenging life would be if Ozu had superpowers,” he explained on X. “That thought led to Krypto becoming part of the script and reshaping the story just as Ozu was reshaping my life.”
DC film reboot launches with ‘Superman’
This new chapter of the DC franchise follows a decade’s worth of projects under the prior DC Extended Universe, which began with Snyder’s “Man of Steel” in 2013, featuring Henry Cavill as Superman. Snyder’s serious portrayal received mixed reviews, and many subsequent DC films struggled at the box office against Marvel.
Henry Cavill made a brief return as Superman in the post-credits scene of “Black Adam” in 2022, hinting at a future showdown. However, following the film’s underperformance, Gunn was brought in to lead the franchise in a new direction, introducing a younger version of Superman.
“Our story will focus on an earlier phase of Superman’s journey, hence, Henry Cavill will not be reprising his role,”
In 2022, Gunn shared on X, “We just had an amazing meeting with Henry, and we’re really enthusiastic about collaborating on several thrilling opportunities in the future.”
However, Gunn’s upcoming DC franchise will not disregard its past. Some characters and narratives will remain, such as John Cena’s Peacemaker and Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller.
Gunn faces considerable pressure to rejuvenate the DC brand following the disappointing performance of “Joker: Folie à Deux” at the box office last October, which garnered poor reviews from both critics and viewers.
What is the release date for ‘Superman’?
“Superman” is set to premiere in theaters on July 11, 2025.
This date is notably just two weeks ahead of Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” which could lead to a significant box office competition between these two superhero reboots. The outcome of this contest may hint at whether Marvel will keep its hold on the box office or if Gunn’s DC adaptations will finally pose a serious challenge.
