Villanova Basketball Faces Tough Defeat Against Ivy League’s Columbia

While teams like Duke and North Carolina continue their journey despite coaching challenges, Villanova is struggling to bounce back after the departure of Jay Wright.

In Kyle Neptune’s third year as head coach, the Wildcats have found it difficult, having faced early exits in the first round of the NIT during his initial two seasons after enjoying nine consecutive NCAA tournament participations (excluding the canceled 2020 tournament) under Wright. Their recent setback—a 90-80 defeat at home against Columbia from the Ivy League—might signify a new low point.

This game marked a stark departure from Neptune’s earlier seasons, as Villanova had not allowed 90 or more points in any game during his first two years. Columbia capitalized on its opportunities, making 24 out of 26 free throw attempts, hitting 8 of 24 from behind the three-point line, and shooting an impressive 53.7% from the floor (29 of 54).

Last time Villanova conceded 90 points or more was on January 6, 2018, when they triumphed over Marquette with a score of 100-90.

Currently, Villanova holds a record of 36-34 under Neptune and is 1-1 in the early stages of the 2024-25 season.

Here’s how the college basketball community reacted to this disappointing loss for Villanova.
