‘7th Heaven’ cast discusses Stephen Collins’ ‘unforgivable’ sexual misconduct on their rewatch podcast
Three former stars of “7th Heaven” have publicly condemned the “unforgivable” actions of their ex-colleague Stephen Collins.
Actors Beverley Mitchell, Mackenzie Rosman, and David Gallagher from “7th Heaven” began a rewatch of the series on their podcast “Catching Up with the Camdens” on Monday. Before they jumped into the initial episode, they issued a statement regarding Collins, who admitted in 2014 to several incidents of sexual misconduct involving underage girls.
Mackenzie Rosman, who portrayed Ruthie Camden, expressed that it would be “impossible” to not mention Collins during their rewatch, since he played their father, Eric Camden. “We want to clarify that none of us had any inappropriate encounters with Stephen,” she remarked.
Beverley Mitchell, who played Lucy Camden, pointed out that Collins would not be participating in the podcast and emphasized that they do not “excuse or justify his actions.”
David Gallagher, who played Simon Camden, stated, “All types of abuse, particularly sexual abuse, are inexcusable, and it’s crucial that victims are treated with compassion and provided with support.” He continued, “We recognize how challenging this topic is and that it may trigger difficult emotions for some.”
In 2014, Collins publicly admitted in a statement to People magazine that he had acted inappropriately with three underage girls between 1973 and 1994. This admission followed the release of a recording by TMZ where Collins discussed the alleged abuse during a confidential therapy session.
“Forty years ago, I committed a grave mistake that I deeply regret,” he declared to People. “I have been striving to make amends ever since. I chose to speak out publicly because a few months ago, different media outlets released a clandestine recording made by my then-wife, Faye Grant, during a private marriage therapy session in January 2012. This recording was made without my or the therapist’s consent or knowledge.”
During an interview with Katie Couric, Collins confessed that he had exposed himself to a 10-year-old girl in 1973 and afterward “took her hand and positioned it in such a manner that she was touching me inappropriately.” He knew then that “something unspeakably wrong had just occurred that I could never undo.”
Collins further acknowledged two additional incidents in 1982 and 1994, involving “exposing myself to two separate teenage girls,” aged 13 and 14. He claimed there was no physical contact and described such actions as stemming from his “poor impulse control,” while asserting, “I do not have an attraction towards underage girls.”
As a result of the allegations, Collins was dismissed from his roles in “Scandal” and was dropped from the film “Ted 2,” and he has not taken on any acting roles since 2014.
