Aaliyah Barbie Doll Launches on Late Singer’s Birthday, Instantly Sells Out!

Aaliyah Barbie doll sells out on the birthday of the late R&B star

A limited-edition Barbie doll inspired by the late singer Aaliyah was released on Thursday in celebration of her birthday, but it quickly sold out.

This doll was meant to be available for just one day or until supplies ran out, as part of the Music Series. However, by Thursday morning, it was already marked as sold out on the Mattel Creations website.

Priced at $55, the doll features Aaliyah, whose full name is Aaliyah Haughton, dressed in a faux leather ensemble reminiscent of her “One in a Million” music video. It was first made available exclusively via the Mattel website to members of the Barbie Club 59, with plans for the doll to be sold at Target as part of the one-day event.

The beloved R&B artist would have celebrated her 46th birthday on Thursday.

Aaliyah was born in Brooklyn, New York, on January 16, 1979, and grew up in Detroit. She burst onto the music scene and topped the Hot 100 Billboard charts with her debut single at the age of 15.

Her second album, “One in a Million,” achieved double platinum status within a year, earning her Grammy nominations for “Are You That Somebody?” and “Try Again.” Aaliyah also collaborated with prominent figures in music like Missy Elliott, Timbaland, and, controversially, R. Kelly.

Tragically, she lost her life in a plane crash in the Bahamas at the age of 22 in 2001, following the filming of her “Rock the Boat” music video.

The Mattel listing highlighted, “Aaliyah’s smooth vocals and groundbreaking sound played a crucial role in shaping ’90s R&B. Her legacy in music and fashion is still felt today.” The tribute to ‘Babygirl’s’ life and music is sure to elevate any collection, it noted.

Other dolls in this music-themed series include those of Tina Turner and Stevie Nicks.
