Abdul Carter Injury Update: Penn State DE Out Against Boise State in Fiesta Bowl

(This article has been updated with the latest details)

If Penn State moves forward past Boise State in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals, they might have to face this match without their standout defensive player.

In the second quarter of the Fiesta Bowl, star defensive end Abdul Carter suffered an apparent upper-body injury following a third-down incompletion. He left the game while the Nittany Lions were leading 14-0 at that point.

Carter made a brief return in the first half but exited the game again shortly after.

Carter was an influential presence early in the game, quickly pressuring Boise State quarterback Maddux Madsen from the edge in the first quarter. The Philadelphia native wrapped up the season with 60 total tackles, 11 sacks, three pass breakups, and two forced fumbles.

Here’s the latest on Carter’s injury from Tuesday’s matchup against Boise State:

Abdul Carter Injury Update

Carter appeared to be injured at the beginning of the second quarter during the Fiesta Bowl against Boise State after a completed pass. He did not return to the game, but the Nittany Lions secured a 31-14 victory to advance to the CFP semifinals.

During the trophy presentation ceremony for the Fiesta Bowl, Carter was spotted lifting the Fiesta Bowl trophy with his right arm instead of his left.

According to Frank Bodani from the York Daily Record, Carter was seen on a stationary bike for the remainder of the second quarter against Boise State.

As the Nittany Lions returned to the field for the second half, Carter was observed with a wrap around his left arm.

In the third quarter, ESPN’s cameras caught a glimpse of Carter on the sidelines, near the bike, while sideline reporter Tom Luginbill provided updates.
