Amy Schumer Reveals How ‘Puffy Face’ Comments Led to Cushing Syndrome Diagnosis

Amy Schumer attributes her Cushing syndrome diagnosis to ‘puffy face’ feedback

Amy Schumer has shared more about how comments from online users led to a significant medical discovery.

During her recent chat on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast on Wednesday, Schumer revealed that she initially dismissed the remarks about her swollen face until medical professionals started commenting.
“Doctors were joining in and saying, ‘No, no… something’s clearly wrong. Your face looks quite unusual,'” she explained to the host, Alex Cooper, mentioning that they suspected she might have Cushing syndrome.

As stated by the Mayo Clinic, Cushing syndrome occurs when the body has an excess of cortisol, a hormone, over a prolonged period. This condition can lead to a “moon face,” characterized by a puffy look.

Schumer attributed her diagnosis to steroid treatments she received following a breast reduction and a C-section after the birth of her first child.
The comedian has frequently discussed her various health challenges, including her unexpected Cushing syndrome diagnosis.

Last year, Schumer candidly talked about her health experiences with journalist Jessica Yellin in the News Not Noise column on Substack.
“I underwent MRIs that lasted four hours, had my veins collapsing from too many blood draws, and was concerned I might not be around to see my son grow up. Finding out I have the type of Cushing syndrome that will resolve on its own and that I’m healthy was the best news I could have received,” she shared in her conversation with Yellin.

Schumer expressed that she felt “reborn” when she revealed the news amidst the criticism she faced. The “Trainwreck” actress had previously addressed her critics directly.
“Thank you all for your feedback on my face! I’ve appreciated the discussions and opinions on my looks as every woman does for nearly 20 years. And yes, it’s true that my face is puffier than usual right now,” Schumer noted in February.
She also mentioned, “There are some medical and hormonal issues happening with me, but I’m doing fine.” Additionally, she has spoken out about having endometriosis, a condition in which tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus.

What are the symptoms of Cushing syndrome?

Cushing syndrome presents multiple signs and symptoms. The Mayo Clinic states that these may include weight gain in the facial area, a fatty pad between the shoulders, a rounded face, pink or purple stretch marks on the skin, acne, slow healing of wounds, and thin, fragile skin that bruises easily.

Cortisol is a hormone essential for managing stress responses and is crucial for various bodily functions including blood pressure regulation, blood sugar control, inflammation reduction, energy utilization from food, and ensuring proper heart and blood vessel functioning.
