Colorado DE Nikhil Webb Walker shares lymphoma diagnosis, finds support in Deion Sanders

Nikhil Webb Walker, a sophomore defensive end at Colorado, disclosed to his teammates this week that he has been diagnosed with lymphoma.

Webb Walker noticed a lump on his chest one morning and expected it to disappear. After two weeks with no change, he underwent a biopsy that confirmed the lymphoma, but doctors reassured him that it is “very treatable.”

During this physically and emotionally challenging period, Webb Walker expressed that the support from his teammates has brought him a sense of comfort and solace.

“Just being around you guys has made this process more manageable for me,” he said in a speech recorded for social media. “I want to thank you all because you’ve made things easier, despite how tough it is. I never imagined I would face something like this, but it’s part of a bigger plan. I’m grateful for your support, keeping me positive and smiling.”

This season marks Webb Walker’s debut with the team after transferring from New Mexico State.

He initially hesitated to publicly announce his diagnosis to avoid being a distraction to the team, but coach Deion Sanders quickly countered this perspective.

“You are not a distraction. You are a blessing,” Sanders stated. “You help us appreciate what life is truly about. While we engage in this game of football for money and entertainment, what you are going through is real. Your strength in facing it is inspiring. We love you, we appreciate you, and we stand by your side.”

As he goes through chemotherapy, Webb Walker will frequently be visiting and leaving the team’s facility. Sanders emphasized that even in his absence, the team remains supportive.

“Always remember that we love you,” Sanders affirmed. “There will always be a spot for you here.”
