Deion Sanders addresses rumors of becoming the Cowboys’ coach
Just hours after the Dallas Cowboys announced that Mike McCarthy would no longer be their head coach, Deion Sanders’ name surfaced as a candidate for the job. The legendary Pro Football Hall of Famer and former Cowboys player is being considered as a significant possibility as the team seeks a new head coach.
Currently, Sanders is the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes football team, a role he has held since 2023. After hearing reports of the Cowboys reaching out to him regarding the coaching position, Sanders provided a response.
“I have a lot of respect for [Cowboys owner Jerry Jones] and I have faith in him,” Sanders told ESPN on Monday night during the Vikings-Rams playoff game, according to Adam Schefter. “Once you take a moment to think about it, it is an interesting proposition. However, I truly love Boulder, my team, the coaches, our student body, and the entire community.”
Having just wrapped up his second year with the Buffaloes, Sanders’ team saw cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter win the prestigious 2024 Heisman Trophy, while the Buffaloes improved their record to 9-4 after finishing 4-8 in Sanders’ inaugural season in Boulder.
Sanders has previously mentioned that he would contemplate an NFL coaching role if it meant mentoring his sons, Shedeur and Shilo. Shedeur is projected to be a top pick in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft.
Support for Sanders taking the Cowboys job has been expressed by former Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant on X. Additionally, former NFL quarterback and current ESPN analyst Robert Griffin III recommended that the Cowboys hire Sanders even before these discussions emerged.
