Dick Cheney endorses Kamala Harris for 2024, warns against Trump
A notable figure has added his name to the growing roster of conservatives who will vote for Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris in 2024: former Vice President Dick Cheney.
Cheney, who was the second-in-command under President George W. Bush, stated on Friday, “In the span of 248 years, there has never been a person more dangerous to our democracy than Donald Trump.”
He further claimed, “He attempted to overturn the previous election, resorting to deception and violence to cling to power after being rejected by voters. He should never be trusted with authority again.” Cheney, whose career in government has drawn both admiration and criticism—including his strong pro-energy policies and advocacy for the Iraq War—has recently found some bipartisan support due to his stance against Trump.
In a memorable moment from early 2022, numerous House Democrats approached Cheney for a handshake as he visited the Capitol on the anniversary of the January 6 insurrection.
Cheney’s remarks on Friday referenced the January 6 events, stating, “As citizens, we hold a responsibility to prioritize our nation over party interests to protect our Constitution. Therefore, I will be voting for Vice President Kamala Harris.”
The news regarding Cheney’s voting plans was initially announced by his daughter, former Rep. Liz Cheney, at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin. Liz, who was part of the now-disbanded House committee investigating the January 6 events, endorsed Harris during a speech at Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy on Wednesday.
Liz Cheney stated, “As a conservative who respects the Constitution, I have reflected extensively on this decision. Due to the risks associated with Donald Trump, I will not support him and will instead vote for Kamala Harris.”
Liz Cheney has been vocal in her criticism of Trump, even expressing regret about her vote for him in the 2020 election.
The endorsement from Dick Cheney follows a wider trend, as a significant group of former Republicans have also pledged their support for Harris.
Last month, 238 former Republican officials associated with Bush, the late Senator John McCain, and Senator Mitt Romney openly expressed their backing for the Democratic nominee through a published letter.
