Explore Kona Stories, a Hawaiian bookstore with ocean views and three friendly cats
Independent bookstores are the soul of their communities. They enrich culture, create local employment opportunities, contribute to sales tax income, enhance literacy and education, highlight diverse and emerging authors, provide personal connections between readers and books, and champion the right to read and enjoy literature in their local areas.
Every week, we spotlight an independent bookstore to showcase what makes each one unique and share their specialized book recommendations.
This week, we’re featuring Kona Stories, located in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii!
What’s the story behind your store?
Kona Stories was established in 2006 by Brenda McConnell and Joy Vogelgesang. As a women-owned general interest bookstore, they offer over 10,000 titles! Their focus is on Hawaiiana, but they also provide children’s literature, educational toys, locally crafted gifts, and greeting cards. Kona Stories even has a consignment option to promote local authors!
What sets your independent bookstore apart?
We take pride in being a welcoming environment for all individuals, regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, financial status, or political beliefs.
Readers from all walks of life enjoy our various book clubs, writing groups, workshops, and author events that happen weekly. Our bookstore boasts a stunning ocean view, and Hawaiian cultural celebrations are frequently hosted in our courtyard at the Keauhou Shopping Center. Visitors can relax in cozy chairs, play with a cat, or chat with the owners.
What’s your favorite section in the store?
I particularly love our greeting cards. Kona Stories is distinguished for its unique, locally crafted greeting cards. We feature over 40 local artists, showcasing beautiful and affordable works. The most sought-after are the cards featuring our three bookstore cats.
Why is it significant to support local, independent bookstores?
When you shop locally, your money directly benefits your community. Our bookstore supports local sports teams, the community orchestra and choir, contributes to animal shelters, and provides job opportunities to local teenagers.
What upcoming events, programs, or collaborations do you have to share this quarter?
If you’re interested in meeting new people in the community, consider joining one of the book clubs at Kona Stories.
Every month, we host Words and Wine (a night with local authors), fiction and non-fiction book clubs, and Keiki (children’s) Storytime. All our events are free and open to everyone.
Here are some book recommendations from the staff of Kona Stories:
- “The Uncharted Flight of Olivia West” by Sara Ackerman (a local author who frequently visits Kona Stories!)
- “Project Hail Mary” by Andy Weir
- “The Wide Wide Sea” by Hampton Sides
