Dua Lipa reunites with music teacher who transformed her life in CBS special
Through incredible hope, Dua Lipa’s aspiration to perform at the Royal Albert Hall has become a reality.
The 29-year-old artist, known for the song “Training Season,” showcased her popular tracks in London, accompanied by a 53-piece orchestra during “An Evening with Dua Lipa,” a CBS primetime show that was broadcast on Sunday.
Aside from her musical performances, the special featured behind-the-scenes glimpses and interviews with the Grammy Award-winning artist. Reflecting on her early music journey, Lipa fondly remembered her music teacher, Ray, from Sylvia Young Theatre School, who significantly impacted her life by believing in her talent.
“He recognized my very deep voice,” she reflected, mentioning that it had been ten years since she last saw him. “He said, ‘You’ve got something special. Use it.’ Sometimes, just a single encouraging word can influence your entire life. He completely altered my path.”
During Ray’s interview segment in the show, Lipa surprised him by entering, leading to an emotional reunion for both.
“You made a huge difference in my life,” she expressed. “You inspired me and helped me believe in myself, making me feel I had something to strive for. I genuinely think that’s the reason I’m successful today.”
With tears in his eyes, Ray responded that this meant a lot to him and remarked that she had already shown her gratitude “by being such a dedicated student.”
Earlier in the show, Lipa mentioned her long-held desire to perform exclusively with an orchestra to “focus on the music like I have never done before,” and expressed how moving it was to hear her songs reimagined with orchestral arrangements. She delivered a repertoire of her greatest hits, including “Houdini,” “Training Season,” and “Dance the Night” from the “Barbie” soundtrack.
“This has been a lifelong dream of mine,” she stated. “When I was younger, I would pass by the Royal Albert Hall and think, ‘Maybe one day I’ll get to perform there.’
In a touching segment, Lipa also revisited the New York venue where she held her first concert in 2016.
Elton John makes a surprise appearance during ‘An Evening with Dua Lipa’ at Royal Albert Hall
Elton John also made a guest appearance, performing their song “Cold Heart” together. During interviews, they spoke about their friendship, including footage of their first meeting in 2021, which began when John invited Lipa to perform at an Oscar party hosted by the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
“I’ve adored her from the start, which marked the beginning of our friendship,” John remarked.
Lipa expressed her gratitude for John’s mentorship, saying she feels “incredibly fortunate” to have him supporting her.
