Eagles coach Nick Sirianni plays down heated exchange with fans
Sports fans in Philadelphia are well-known for their ability to unsettle opposing teams. However, it’s less common for them to target the home team.
This was perhaps the case during the Eagles’ recent 20-16 win against the Cleveland Browns.
After taking a break for a bye week, the Eagles were favored by 8 points against a Browns team that has faced significant offensive struggles throughout the season. Unfortunately, a questionable play call just before halftime led to a blocked field goal, which the Browns returned for a touchdown, tying the game at the break.
The Philadelphia fans, as expected, voiced their displeasure while the teams left the field, with shouts of “Fire Nick!” echoing through the stadium.
The Eagles managed to regain control, with DeVonta Smith scoring a crucial 45-yard touchdown halfway through the fourth quarter that secured the win. As the game was coming to a close, Sirianni engaged in a spirited exchange with fans located behind the team’s bench.
In the post-game press conference, Sirianni dismissed the incident as insignificant.
“When I’m enjoying myself and operating at a high level, that energy spreads to the rest of the team,” he explained. “If I want my players to celebrate after making big plays, I should set that example myself, right?”
This victory put the Eagles at a record of 3-2, placing them half a game behind the Washington Commanders in the NFC East.
Although Sirianni’s behavior attracted criticism from both local and national commentators, he insisted the exchange with the fans was all in good fun.
“It was totally just playful banter,” he said. “We draw energy from the crowd when they support us. We notice when they boo us, and while it’s not enjoyable, we prefer when they’re cheering. It pushes us to perform better.”
