Elle King expresses concern for dad Rob Schneider after discussing ‘her truth’
Elle King is sharing insights into her complicated relationship with her well-known father.
The singer and daughter of comedian Rob Schneider spoke to People about their intricate relationship in an interview published on Thursday, which raised speculation of a feud after comments she made in a podcast earlier this year.
“I never thought something I said would go viral. I was simply talking about my childhood and sharing my truth,” she explained in the interview. “I didn’t intend to hurt him.”
In August, Elle mentioned on the “Dumb Blonde” podcast with Bunnie XO that she sometimes goes “four or five years without speaking to my dad.”
YSL News reached out for statements from King’s representatives, while a spokesperson for Schneider stated, “We have no comment.”
During her conversation with Bunnie XO, the spouse of artist Jelly Roll, King shared that Schneider “forgot every single birthday” and recounted an experience of celebrating her 18th birthday during summer school. “They brought me cupcakes, and when I got home, my dad had forgotten it,” she recalled.
She further stated that she disagrees with many of her father’s opinions, mentioning criticisms he made regarding drag and LGBTQ+ rights after he voiced his discontent on social media about drag queens being involved in the Olympics.
King noted to Bunnie XO that she was “a very overweight child” and that her father sent her to “fat camp,” where she got into trouble for spraining her ankle and not losing weight. She also mentioned that Schneider once called her to insist she stop discussing him in public.
Elle King discusses Rob Schneider’s statements and Tucker Carlson interview
Additionally, King commented that Schneider’s recent apology during a Tucker Carlson interview felt like “a double negative” and carried no real meaning.
She expressed to People that “a lot of people questioned, ‘How could she say that about her family?’ suggesting that everything should be kept private. But I believe sometimes you need to speak your thoughts to relieve yourself of the burdens you carry.”
King remarked that she would make her comments repeatedly if it helps reinforce her position as an ally to the LGBTQ+ community.
“The best outcome from this situation is that my amazing LGBTQ+ community knows they have my support,” she shared with People.
This year has been a challenging one for the “High Road” artist, who just released a new single on Friday.
Earlier in the year, she faced criticism following a drunken performance at a Dolly Parton tribute concert at the Grand Ole Opry. Subsequently, she revealed on Kaitlyn Bristowe’s “Off the Vine” podcast that she attended a “therapeutic program” after that incident, stating, “Nobody really knows what I was going through behind the scenes.”
