Eric Stonestreet Reflects on the Pain of Rejection Regarding ‘Modern Family’ Spinoff for Mitch and Cam

Eric Stonestreet on the Pain of ‘Modern Family’ Mitch and Cam Spinoff Being Rejected

The journey of Mitch and Cam nearly continued past the series finale of “Modern Family.”

In an interview with Graham Bensinger, Eric Stonestreet, who portrayed Cameron Tucker for 11 seasons on the ABC sitcom, shared his thoughts on the network’s decision to turn down a spinoff focused on his character and his partner, Mitchell (played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson). Stonestreet, 53, mentioned that there was an excellent script for the proposed series, which was supposed to depict Mitch and Cam’s lives in Missouri, but it ultimately did not move forward.

“They simply said no,” he reminisced. “They just didn’t want to pursue it. Jesse and I were hurt by that decision. I think it affected Chris Lloyd (the co-creator) as well.”

Stonestreet expressed his love for the character of Cam and felt he wasn’t finished with the role when the series concluded.

“Jesse and I got a sense that they might have viewed us as the older characters, not deserving of a continuation,” he remarked. “That felt somewhat hurtful. But such decisions are part of business. We can’t let it bother us too much.”

“Modern Family” showcased the dynamics of an extended family and starred notable actors like Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Ed O’Neill, and Sofia Vergara. In its series finale, which aired in 2020, Mitch and Cam chose to move to Missouri.

When asked if a spinoff could still happen in the interview, Stonestreet expressed doubt, stating that “the opportunity has passed.” He understands the reasoning behind not wanting to tarnish the brand with a poorly executed spinoff, yet he believes a Mitch and Cam series would have been a definite success, especially with Lloyd attached as a producer.

“It would have been fantastic,” he continued. “If ABC had approved it, I believe we would be watching it now.”

While the potential spinoff seems unlikely now, Stonestreet hinted at the possibility of a “Modern Family” Christmas special, suggesting, “There have been discussions about it.”

Ferguson had previously mentioned on “Watch What Happens Live” in 2022 that there were “talks” regarding a Mitch and Cam spinoff, but ultimately, the network “rejected the idea.”

“After 11 years, I think they were ready for a change,” he explained.
