‘Rediscover our country’: Have you been to these 10 US destinations?
When planning dream trips, people often think of far-away places and adventures, but some incredible experiences are right here at home.
In anticipation of the U.S. 250th anniversary in 2026, the nonprofit America250 has collaborated with various federal organizations, including the National Archives and Records Administration and the U.S. Department of the Interior, to create a list of essential U.S. destinations dubbed America’s Field Trips.
These locations are ideal for families, showcasing significant U.S. history and culture while offering affordable travel options, be it a simple road trip or a domestic flight. “This is the largest and most inspiring celebration in our nation’s history,” shared America250 Chair Rosie Rios. “It allows everyone in America to unite and reflect on our shared heritage. We believe America’s Field Trips encourage people to rediscover our country.”
The organization is also running a contest for students in grades 3 to 12, inviting them to write essays about what America represents to them. The winners will earn a family trip to one of these destinations in the summer of 2025, complete with unique experiences, such as a candlelight tour of Fort Point in San Francisco led by National Park Service rangers.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity to remind people that the U.S. is not just about Washington, D.C. or Philadelphia; it stretches from Guam to Fairbanks, Alaska, and everything in between,” Rios pointed out.
Here are some notable excursions across the U.S., as suggested by America250.
Independence National Historical Park – Pennsylvania
Independence National Historical Park is renowned as the cradle of American democracy, featuring key landmarks such as Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed, and the Liberty Bell.
Yellowstone National Park – Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming
As the first-ever national park in the United States, Yellowstone is perhaps the most famous and frequently visited park, showcasing the critical efforts of the National Park Service. Many come to witness the iconic Old Faithful geyser, but the park spans 20 million acres and boasts the highest concentration of native wildlife in the continental U.S. According to Rios, the park “represents America’s commitment to conserving our natural landscapes for those who come after us.”
National Archives Museum – Washington, D.C.
No visit to Washington, D.C., is complete without stopping at the National Archives Museum. It houses some of America’s most vital documents, including the Declaration of Independence.
Smithsonian National Zoo – Washington, D.C.
The Smithsonian National Zoo, established in the 1880s, stands as one of the oldest in the nation and is a leader in conservation efforts via its Conservation Biology Institute. Admission is free, allowing everyone to explore and learn about the more than 2,200 animals residing there.
San Francisco Bay – California
While San Francisco is often recognized for its bustling tech industry, it also has a deep history of immigration and trade. “The bay has historically been a center for trade and immigration, showcasing the area’s rich cultural diversity,” Rios explained. Visitors can explore Angel Island State Park or the historic Fort Point from the Civil War era.
Mesa Verde National Park – Colorado
Mesa Verde National Park is not only stunning for its dramatic sandstone cliffs but is also notable for its Ancestral Pueblo cliff dwellings, which showcase some of the oldest and most remarkable architecture found in the country. “These archaeological sites illustrate the lives, customs, and creativity of the Indigenous Peoples who lived in the area nearly 700 years ago,” Rios said.
Kennedy Space Center – Florida
The Kennedy Space Center, established in 1962, has served as NASA’s main launch facility and is rich in the history of American space endeavors. Guests to the center can discover details about iconic missions like Apollo 11, which launched in 1969, as well as the opportunity to witness live rocket launches up close.
Charleston – South Carolina
This delightful Southern city is rich in history. Once a significant colonial port, it was also one of the early battlegrounds of the Civil War. As visitors stroll through the streets, they can admire historic architecture dating back to the 1700s and visit notable sites such as the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum, which features important military vessels.
San Antonio and Austin – Texas
San Antonio offers more than just its renowned culinary delights. It is the location of the historic Alamo, which symbolizes Texas’ quest for independence from Mexico and honors the sacrifices made by those who fought there. Meanwhile, in Austin, visitors can explore the LBJ Presidential Library, which highlights President Johnson’s contributions to pivotal events like the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War.
