Man faces fatal kidnapping charges in 2016 disappearance of woman and daughter in Florida
A man from Florida is facing the possibility of life imprisonment or even execution if found guilty of kidnapping and causing the deaths of his daughter and her mother, who vanished in May 2016.
Gustavo Alfonso Castano Restrepo, 55, has been charged with kidnapping resulting in death, as announced by the United States Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of Florida on October 29.
The missing individuals, Liliana Moreno, 8, and her mother, Daniella Moreno, 42, were last seen on May 30, 2016, near a Home Depot in Hialeah Gardens, located roughly 25 miles northwest of Miami, according to the FBI.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office claims Restrepo is responsible for the kidnapping of 8-year-old Liliana, resulting in the deaths of both Liliana and Daniella Moreno.
A lawyer for Restrepo declined to comment when approached on Monday afternoon. He has a court date set for an arraignment, pretrial detention hearing, and counsel hearing on Wednesday morning.
Investigation led authorities to a warehouse
Alongside the FBI, both the Miami-Dade Police Department Homicide Bureau and the Doral Police Department joined forces to search for the missing mother and daughter when they first reported missing.
According to family members speaking to the Miami Herald in 2016, Restrepo was already married to someone else when his daughter was born, and he met Daniella through work.
Daniella Moreno’s sister, who lives in Colombia, contacted authorities after not hearing from her, as reported by the Miami Herald. When investigators examined her apartment, they discovered her purse, wallet, and found her car parked outside with the front door locked. They also determined that Liliana had been absent from school.
Despite extensive searches by authorities, they were unable to find the mother and daughter. Restrepo emerged as a person of interest in the case. Days after their disappearance, police located him in a Home Depot parking lot attempting to consume a toxic substance and had inflicted a stab wound to his neck.
While apprehending him, an officer used a taser, which inadvertently struck him in the eye, resulting in partial blindness.
The investigation eventually directed authorities to a warehouse in Medley, approximately 15 minutes away from Doral.
If Restrepo is found guilty, the minimum sentence he faces is life imprisonment, while the maximum penalty is death, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about this case to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or to report online at www.tips.fbi.gov/home.
