Iowa State Women’s Basketball Ends 3-Pointer Streak at 945 Games—A Nearly 30-Year Record
It’s been quite a while since the Iowa State women’s basketball team last went a game without making a 3-point basket.
On Tuesday night, the Cyclones claimed a victory over Texas Tech, winning 71-58. However, they saw their NCAA record streak of 945 consecutive games with at least one 3-pointer come to an end at Hilton Coliseum, as they finished the game with 0 for 7 shooting from long range. This marked the first occasion where Iowa State did not successfully make a 3-pointer during Bill Fennelly’s coaching tenure, which began in 1996.
The last time Iowa State went a game without making a 3-pointer was on February 19, 1995, against Colorado when Theresa Becker was the head coach. At that time, the Big 12 Conference had not yet been established.
“We only attempted seven shots from beyond the arc, so it wasn’t a priority for us,” Fennelly remarked after the game regarding the streak. “If we were really concerned about maintaining the record, we probably would have run a lot more plays specifically for a 3-pointer.”
“I understand that some people think it’s a big deal and it is to us as well. I take pride in that streak. But it’s similar to a kid aiming for a triple-double; I’m not going to keep them on the court just for personal stats. We tried to set up two plays for a 3, but both occurred in the first half.”
Iowa State’s offense also revolves around center Audi Crooks, who excels in the paint. The 6-foot-3 sophomore is putting up impressive stats this season with an average of 22.6 points and 7.7 rebounds per game, shooting at an efficient 60.2%. She contributed 28 points in Tuesday’s match. Fellow forward Addy Brown also had a strong performance, scoring 21 points and providing seven rebounds along with five assists against the Red Raiders.
Currently, Iowa State ranks third in the Big 12 for 3-pointers made this season with a total of 151, behind TCU, which leads with 177. The significance of the 3-point shot has transformed basketball over recent decades and played a major role in Fennelly’s efforts to revitalize the program through the years. Under his leadership, the Cyclones have secured three conference tournament titles and have become a regular participant in the NCAA tournament.
Overall, Iowa State has made 22 appearances in the NCAA tournament, all during Fennelly’s time as head coach. This season, it seems that this iteration of the Cyclones may find success by utilizing different scoring methods.
