James Van Der Beek Faces Shock and Distress After Stage 3 Colorectal Cancer Diagnosis

James Van Der Beek Shocked by Stage 3 Colorectal Cancer Diagnosis

James Van Der Beek has opened up about the moment he was informed of his cancer diagnosis.

The “Dawson’s Creek” actor spoke with People magazine, announcing that he has been diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer in a statement released on Sunday.

“I’ve been handling this diagnosis privately and taking steps to overcome it, thanks to my amazing family,” Van Der Beek shared earlier.

In a recent article, Van Der Beek explained how a colonoscopy altered his life path. He noticed changes in his bowel movements and thought about altering his diet to address potential health issues. When those changes did not yield any improvement, he decided to schedule a colonoscopy.

“I thought I needed to cut out coffee or maybe stop using cream,” Van Der Beek told People. “But when I didn’t see any improvements after making those changes, I figured it was time to get it checked out.”

He recounted: “Coming out of anesthesia, I felt relieved that I finally went through with it. But then the gastroenterologist, with a friendly demeanor, told me it was cancer. I think I went into shock at that moment.”

Understanding Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer, also known as colon cancer, arises when polyps or growths form on the inner lining of the colon, as described by the Cleveland Clinic. Without treatment, this cancer could spread to other parts of the body.

Van Der Beek hasn’t specified his treatment strategy, but colon cancer is usually treated with chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery.

Despite being diagnosed with stage 3 cancer, Van Der Beek remains hopeful.

“I’m cautiously optimistic. I’m healing well, and my energy is great. Once I’ve been through enough time for recovery, I’ll circle back to update you,” said Van Der Beek.
