John Stamos Kicked Out of Scientology for Having Fun
John Stamos is opening up about the reasons behind his departure from the Church of Scientology.
In a recent episode of the “Friend in High Places” podcast, hosted by comedian Matt Friend, Stamos shared how he first got involved with the controversial organization.
“I was attending an acting class and there was this attractive girl,” Stamos reminisced. “She invited me to a gathering at a specific address on Hollywood Boulevard after our class. At the time, I was working at my dad’s restaurant, and I told him, ‘Dad, I need to go.’ So I went, and it turned out to be the Scientology building. I was around 16 or 17.”
He also mentioned that his admiration for John Travolta motivated him to explore Scientology, as Travolta had joined the church back in the 1970s.
“I wanted to be like John Travolta, and I still do,” he stated. However, he never officially became a member due to an amusing incident that led to his exit from the church.
Stamos recounted his visit to the Scientology center, where he was introduced to a device called the “E-Meter,” which consisted of two cans. After pretending to have a phone conversation as characters from “Rocky and Bullwinkle,” Stamos humorously noted, “They just kicked me out” for being too playful.
Stamos shared earlier about his departure from Scientology in his 2023 memoir, “If You Would Have Told Me.” In June, during an interview with YSL News’s The Essentials, he discussed his favorite summer activities, which include spending quality time with his family.
For Stamos, summer is all about cooking pizza for friends. “But the parties have changed over time,” Stamos noted, as he has been sober since 2015. “Now, there are a lot of kids running around, laughing, and throwing water balloons.”
He mentioned that his son, Billy, frequently surprises him with water attacks when he arrives home from work.
“I’m so tired, and he’s just waiting behind a bush with a hose,” Stamos described. “The joy he gets from spraying his dad is just delightful to me. That’s what summer means to me.”
