Jontay Porter Involved in Alleged Betting Scheme During NBA Game, Court Records Reveal

Jontay Porter allegedly communicated about betting during an NBA game, court records reveal

Recent court filings indicate that former Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter sent messages to purported accomplices in his gambling case while an NBA game was underway.

On Sunday, law enforcement apprehended 39-year-old Shane Hennen in Las Vegas as he was trying to board a one-way flight to Colombia. At the time of his arrest, Hennen was carrying several cell phones and approximately $10,000 in cash.

Hennen marks the sixth individual to face charges in connection with the alleged betting operation involving Porter. Accompanying Hennen’s arrest, federal officials released a text Porter sent, revealing that during the game against the Memphis Grizzlies on January 22, 2024, he intended to take himself out of play.

Porter had previously entered a guilty plea in July for conspiracy related to wire fraud and has since been permanently banned from the NBA. He is looking at a maximum sentence of 20 years when he is sentenced on May 20.

As per documents acquired by YSL News Sports, Porter, who sustained an eye injury during the game, messaged two alleged accomplices, stating, “I went back to the locker room to get my eye checked. I’m not sure if I’ll play much more. I’m not starting in the second half, but if it’s garbage time, I will shoot a million shots.”

The court documents reveal that one of the alleged co-conspirators forwarded Porter’s message to Hennen on January 26, which read: “Hit unders for the big numbers. No blocks, no steals. I’m going to play the first 2-3 minutes off the bench, then when I get subbed out, tell them my eye is killing me again.”

While the complaint does not name Porter directly, referring to him as “NBA Player 1,” it is evident that this designation pertains to him due to the details surrounding his guilty plea in the case.

Authorities also mentioned that Hennen received insider information regarding a game on March 20 and was informed that Porter would remove himself from the game.
