Julia Fox Reflects on Her Time with Ye: ‘I Felt Like a Tool’
Julia Fox has mixed feelings about her brief romance with Ye.
The 34-year-old actress, known for her role in “Uncut Gems,” spoke candidly in an interview with the U.K.’s Sunday Times about her month-long relationship with the artist formerly known as Kanye West in early 2022.
“I regret that relationship tremendously,” she expressed. “I despise it! Though it lasted only a few weeks, it left a lasting impact. I was in one of the most uncomfortable situations of my life, and that’s significant. I don’t want my identity to be defined by being someone’s girlfriend.”
Fox mentioned that the decision for their relationship to go public was not hers, stating she believed they should have waited. But unexpectedly, she found out it had been announced without her knowledge. She felt that Ye was leveraging their relationship to provoke his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian.
“I quickly realized that I was being used as a pawn,” she revealed.
In her conversation with The Sunday Times, Fox credited her 3-year-old son, Valentino, as a “grounding force” that enabled her to step away from the relationship. “I realized I couldn’t spiral downwards because no man, regardless of their wealth or fame, is worth even a moment away from my child,” she shared.
In January 2022, Fox confirmed her relationship with Ye in an article for Interview Magazine, recalling how they met in Miami on New Year’s Eve just days before and felt an “instant connection.”
Later, in her memoir “Down the Drain,” she disclosed that Ye had attempted to have her publish a “totally made-up” narrative of their meeting, which did not align with her version. She indicated that what was ultimately published was a compromise between their two versions.
Although she did not name Ye in her 2023 memoir, it was evident he was the “artist” she referred to in the text. She recounted Ye warning her through text that he “couldn’t remain friends” unless she signed a non-disclosure agreement, which she declined, replying, ‘I’ll live.’
In a 2023 appearance on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” Fox likened dating Ye to managing a second child.
“My son must come first,” she said. “It became overwhelming, as I didn’t sign up to care for two kids. Ultimately, I believe he was in need of a full-time partner, which I couldn’t be.”
Earlier this year, Fox mentioned in an interview with YSL News that she was “not seeing anyone at the moment” and that she “lacked the emotional, physical, and mental capacity” for a relationship.
In July, Fox appeared to come out as a lesbian on TikTok when she reacted to a comedian’s video, explaining, “I love seeing a lesbian with her boyfriend. It’s like, ah, you really don’t like that guy.” While on the street, Fox quipped, “Hey, that was me. I used to be that lesbian. Sorry, boys. Not happening again.”
In her interview with The Sunday Times, Fox confirmed her belief that she identifies as a lesbian, stating, “I would definitely be open to dating a woman.”
