The cast of “Downton Abbey” shared their condolences for the loss of the beloved actress on Friday.

Smith portrayed Lady Violet Crawley on the PBS series, with her character passing away from illness in the concluding moments of “Downton Abbey: A New Era,” a follow-up film to the acclaimed early 20th-century drama that wrapped up its six-season journey in 2015.

“Downton” actress Michelle Dockery, who took on the role of Lady Mary Crawley, expressed her feelings to People, saying, “There was no one quite like Maggie. I feel incredibly fortunate to have known such an unconventional talent. She will be greatly missed, and my thoughts are with her family.”

Hugh Bonneville, another star from the series, noted that “anyone who shared a scene with Maggie can confirm her sharpness, wit, and incredible talent,” adding that “she was a true legend of her time, and her legacy will continue through her outstanding screen performances. My sympathies to her sons and extended family.”

Whoopi Goldberg, an Oscar-winning actress and moderator of “The View,” expressed her sadness through an Instagram post featuring a photo of the two, recalling that her “Sister Act” co-star was “a remarkable woman and a brilliant actress.” She emphasized her disbelief at having worked with such a “one-of-a-kind” talent, sending heartfelt condolences to Smith’s family.

Actor Rob Lowe expressed his sorrow over Smith’s passing, describing working with his co-star from “Suddenly, Last Summer” as an “unforgettable experience.” He likened sharing a scene with her to “being partnered with a lion,” noting she could dominate any situation yet was also humorous and great company. “We will not see her kind again. God speed, Ms. Smith!”

In an interview with The Associated Press, actress Helen Mirren remarked, “she was undoubtedly one of the greatest actresses of the last century,” stating, “It’s a profoundly sad day for the theatre and film community in England.”
