Madison Mayor Expresses Outrage After School Shooting Incident

‘Show some human kindness’: Madison’s mayor expresses frustration at press conference about school shooting

The mayor of Madison, Wisconsin, displayed visible anger towards reporters during a press conference on Tuesday addressing the tragic shooting at a private Christian school that resulted in the deaths of a teacher and a student, alongside six others who were injured, some severely.

“It is absolutely not your concern who was affected in this situation,” stated Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway, responding to questions about the victims’ identities.

“Please, show some human kindness and consider the feelings of those who have lost loved ones, or who themselves or their children have been harmed,” she added.

According to police, a 15-year-old student named Natalie Rupnow opened fire at Abundant Life Christian School around 11 a.m. on Monday. It was reported that Rupnow died due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

As of Tuesday afternoon, two students remained in critical condition, while the other four individuals taken to local hospitals were being treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, as detailed by Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes during the news conference.

The mayor’s sharp remarks were made during a tense ending to the press conference, occurring just over a day after Madison, located approximately 80 miles from Milwaukee, experienced its second school shooting in a year.

“I don’t know how many times I can repeat myself: We will provide accurate information when we are able to do so. No one is required to stay here. You’re free to leave if you wish,” she stated after being questioned repeatedly about the victims and other unresolved matters, such as the school’s bullying policies.

“Just show some human kindness, everyone. Let them be. Allow them the time to grieve, recover, and heal,” she urged. “Do not exploit their suffering. We will disclose information as it becomes available, not before. Thank you.”

Officials mentioned on Tuesday that they were still investigating the motive behind the shooting and were trying to determine how the teenager acquired the handgun used in the incident. Investigators have searched the suspect’s home and are in communication with her family, who are cooperating with the investigation, according to Barnes.

When asked if the suspect’s parents or anyone affiliated with them might face charges, the mayor responded, “We don’t have enough information yet.”
