Matthew Perry’s family has opened up on television about their loss for the first time, with his mother recalling a touching moment prior to her son’s passing.

Suzanne Morrison, Perry’s mother and wife of “Dateline” correspondent Keith Morrison, candidly discussed her son during an interview with Savannah Guthrie on the Today show. This broadcast will air on the first anniversary of his death.

“He came up to me and said, ‘I love you so much, and I’m so happy to be with you now,” Suzanne shared, remembering Perry’s words.

Perry, who was 54 when he passed away, was discovered unresponsive in his pool on October 28, 2023. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner later announced that his death was caused by “the acute effects of ketamine.”

In the Today show preview, Suzanne reflected, “It felt almost like a premonition or something. At the time, I didn’t realize it, but I kept thinking, ‘When was the last time we had a conversation like that?’ It had been years.”

Suzanne and her ex-husband John Bennett Perry, who shared Perry, have since established The Matthew Perry Foundation to support organizations aiding those grappling with addiction and substance abuse.

This interview comes after Dr. Mark Chavez from San Diego pleaded guilty earlier this month in a Los Angeles court to conspiracy to distribute ketamine, the drug involved in Perry’s death. In total, five individuals, including Chavez, faced criminal charges linked to Perry’s demise since August.

During a March 13 episode of the “Today” show’s “Making Space” podcast, Keith Morrison discussed the challenging aftermath of his stepson’s passing, noting it’s particularly difficult for Suzanne.

“As many have told me countless times, the pain doesn’t vanish. It lingers every day, and there’s always a new detail that hits you hard,” Morrison expressed to Kotb.

After the five individuals were charged concerning Perry’s death, his family released a statement expressing their grief.

“We are still heartbroken by Matthew’s passing, but it provides some comfort to know that law enforcement is treating his case very seriously,” the Morrison family’s statement shared with YSL News read.

The statement further mentioned, “We anticipate that justice will prevail, and we’re thankful for the dedicated work of the many agencies that have looked into Matthew’s passing. We hope that unscrupulous drug dealers will take heed.”
