Michael Johnson’s New Track League Welcomes Two More Olympic Medalists
The Grand Slam Track league is growing its team.
On Thursday, Michael Johnson’s new track league revealed the addition of Olympic medalists Fred Kerley and Kenny Bednarek. Kerley, a two-time Olympic medalist, claimed a bronze in the men’s 100 meters at the recent Paris Olympics. He also won a world championship in the 100 meters in 2022. Bednarek has earned two Olympic silver medals in the men’s 200 meters.
“Today is a fantastic milestone for Grand Slam Track,” said Johnson, who serves as the league’s founder and commissioner. “We’ve always claimed GST is for ‘only the fastest,’ and signing Fred and Kenny proves this. Their electrifying performances every time they hit the track are something to look forward to, and I’m eager to see them captivate thousands at our events and millions more watching globally. Adding these two amazing sprinters to our lineup is thrilling, and I’m excited for their debut in Grand Slam Track next year.”
Kerley and Bednarek now join fellow Team USA Olympic medalists Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Cole Hocker, and Yared Nuguse, as well as Great Britain’s Josh Kerr, marking the first six of the total 48 racers in the Grand Slam Track league. Each year, the league will select 48 athletes as Grand Slam Track racers who will compete in four slams annually. Additionally, 48 Grand Slam challengers will also participate in various slam events.
Racers and challengers will compete in various categories, racing in two events at each slam: short sprints (100/200 meters), short hurdles (100/110 hurdles), long sprints (200/400 meters), long hurdles (400 meters), short distance (800/1,500 meters), or long distance (3,000/5,000 meters).
The overall rankings will be decided based on the combined finishing positions of their two races. The fastest total time will serve as a tiebreaker. The winner of each slam group will take home $100,000 in prize money, and the top eight finishers will receive cash rewards.
“When I first learned about Grand Slam Track, I knew I had to be involved,” Kerley said. “Competing excites me, and I believe that fans will truly appreciate this innovative format. It provides an opportunity for the top athletes to face off regularly, while giving us a platform to showcase our skills and broaden our fan base worldwide. I can’t wait to be part of Grand Slam Track.”
Johnson introduced the Grand Slam Track concept in April, with the league set to launch in 2025.
