Love is all around us – whether it’s the tumultuous bond between complicated partners, a deeper connection beyond appearances, or an affinity for thrillers that will leave you on edge.
The electrifying romance between Joker and Harley Quinn comes to life musically in the sequel “Joker: Folie à Deux,” featuring Oscar winners Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga. The couple’s tumultuous encounter begins in prison, but will their quirky love thrive amidst barriers? While their romance may not blossom, numerous individuals attempt to connect, with varying degrees of success, in another season of Netflix’s “Love Is Blind.” If chaotic relationships aren’t your cup of tea and you’re more into genuine scares, this month has a variety of spooky films just for you. Let’s celebrate the Halloween season!
Now let’s dive into the highlights:
Watch Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’
Back in 2019, “Joker” created quite a stir, and its controversy translated into box office success, earning multiple Oscars. The new installment, “Folie à Deux,” takes a different approach by being a musical with songs from the Great American Songbook, including a track by the Bee Gees. While not every ambitious moment lands perfectly, the chemistry between Phoenix and Gaga creates a memorable cinematic experience. (Check out my ★★½ review.)
In an interview with our LA correspondent Bryan Alexander, Phoenix expressed his desire to step away from traditional sequel norms and portray Joker’s romantic life: “What occurs when someone falls for the character you present? That idea was really compelling.”
Catch the drama in Netflix’s latest ‘Love Is Blind’ season
Here’s a fun tidbit: While many reality shows don’t captivate me, I do have a guilty pleasure for “Love Is Blind.” I can’t stand cheap roses, D-list celebrities trying to dance, or judges spinning their chairs, but give me awkward blind dates, fun Mexican getaways, and cringeworthy family introductions all day long.
The first six episodes of Season 7 are currently available to stream, featuring a new set of hopeful couples who get engaged without seeing each other upfront and possibly making it to the altar. I’m cheering for science enthusiasts Garrett and Taylor to succeed (they seem like genuine people!), and my colleague KiMi Robinson interviewed Taylor about her decision to keep her mom’s name private during their pod interactions to maintain some cultural mystique. “It was a chance for someone to not visualize my appearance at all,” she shares.
Get in the Halloween spirit with scary movies, including Sarah Paulson’s ‘Hold Your Breath’
While deciding between handing out bite-size or full-size candies this Halloween, don’t forget to set aside some time for horror films. It’s that spooky time of year! I’ve compiled a list of 15 new horror movies to get you ready for Halloween, including Stephen King’s “Salem’s Lot,” the culinary horror “House of Spoils,” and the intriguing body-swap story “It’s What’s Inside.”
Sarah Paulson, known for her role in “American Horror Story,” stars in the historical thriller “Hold Your Breath,” now streaming on Hulu. My friend Ralphie Aversa had a chat with her about her techniques for being a successful scream queen, recalling an incident during “AHS” where a “steroid shot was necessary to help me get through that day.”
