Nicholas Alexander Chavez Addresses Erik Menendez’s Critique of ‘Monsters’ Netflix Series

‘Monsters’ actor Nicholas Alexander Chavez reacts to Erik Menendez’s criticism of Netflix series

Erik Menéndez is not pleased with a recent Netflix series about him and his brother, prompting one of the show’s actors to share his thoughts.

Nicholas Alexander Chavez, who portrays Lyle Menéndez in the Netflix series “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” responded on Monday after Erik Menéndez released a statement criticizing the show. During the launch of Ryan Murphy’s new series “Grotesquerie,” the 25-year-old actor expressed his understanding.

“I only have sympathy and empathy to offer, as I can only imagine how hard it must be to have the most traumatic experience of your life portrayed for everyone to see,” he told YSL News.

In 1996, Lyle and Erik Menéndez were found guilty of murdering their parents and received life sentences. The brothers asserted that their father, José Menéndez, had subjected them to years of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse before the killings.

Netflix’s “Monsters” portrays their saga over the course of nine episodes and features Cooper Koch as Erik Menéndez, alongside Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny as their parents, José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menéndez. The show follows “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” which starred Evan Peters.

Chavez shared with YSL News that he conducted thorough research for “Monsters,” which included watching documentaries, reading books about the Menéndez brothers, and reviewing court television coverage from that time.

“Court TV gives insight into what happened back then, but the series aims to elaborate on many details beyond just the courtroom drama,” he explained. “This adds to its intrigue.”

Following the premiere of “Monsters,” Erik Menéndez expressed his displeasure with the series, calling it filled with “horrible and blatant lies” in a statement from his wife.

“I can only think that these were intentional,” he stated. “It truly saddens me to say that I believe Ryan Murphy cannot be this naive and misinformed about the realities of our lives to do this without malicious intent.”

Some viewers have criticized the series for suggesting that the Menéndez brothers may have been in an incestuous relationship. One scene depicts the brothers kissing, while another shows their mother walking in on them while they shower together. This latter moment is depicted as a theory presented by journalist Dominick Dunne (Nathan Lane) rather than a fact.

In his critique, Menéndez condemned Murphy for the “vile and appalling character portrayals” of both himself and Lyle, questioning, “Is the truth not enough?”
