Dispute Over Olympic Gymnastics Scoring: Court of Arbitration for Sport Made Errors in Appeal

This adds another layer to the series of mistakes surrounding the Olympic gymnastics bronze medal situation over the past week:

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) failed to communicate with the appropriate U.S. officials while preparing for last week’s Romanian appeal concerning Jordan Chiles’ bronze medal, according to an anonymous source with knowledge of the issue, who spoke to YSL News Sports on Monday.

CAS was expected to inform both the U.S. and Romania, but it mistakenly reached out to the incorrect U.S. officials. It’s unclear if this blunder influenced CAS’s decision against Chiles. However, the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee remarked on Sunday:

“There were significant mistakes in both the original scoring done by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the subsequent CAS appeal process that need to be rectified. The first error happened during FIG’s scoring, and the second error occurred during the CAS appeal process, where the USOPC did not receive enough time or proper notification to effectively contest the ruling.

“Consequently, we were not adequately represented and could not present our case in full. Under these circumstances, we are determined to file an appeal to ensure that Jordan Chiles gains the recognition she rightly deserves. We continue to support her as an Olympic champion and will work tirelessly to resolve this issue promptly and fairly.”
