Orlando Bloom shares that his significant weight loss for ‘The Cut’ left him feeling ‘very hangry’
Orlando Bloom is passionate about creating impactful art, even if it requires personal sacrifices.
In the sports thriller “The Cut,” Bloom portrays a retired boxer who must stick to a strict weight loss regimen to get back in fighting shape. During an interview at Variety’s Toronto Film Festival Studio, he revealed details about his significant weight loss.
The actor disclosed that he “gradually reduced his food intake over a three-month period leading up to filming.”
“I lost 52 pounds, starting at around 185,” he mentioned. “That’s a considerable amount of weight, and I faced significant mental challenges too. Eating just tuna and cucumbers for extended periods…”
Director Sean Ellis explained that the film was shot in reverse order, allowing Bloom to incrementally gain weight throughout the 25-day shoot.
“His brain was deprived of calories,” Ellis said. “It would have been hard for him to perform effectively while following a diet. So, he started at his lightest weight and then gradually began eating again.”
Despite the physical challenges, Bloom noted that the mental strain of embodying his character surprised him.
“I was taken aback by the psychological side of it, particularly the sleep deprivation, more so than the lack of calories,” Bloom admitted. “There’s so much happening in your mind… It was tough to remain in that mental state for an extended period.”
Orlando Bloom reveals that Katy Perry was ‘freaked out’ by his performance in ‘The Cut’
“I was extremely hangry. For the final three weeks in London before filming began, it was strictly tuna and cucumbers,” he recalled, noting that he worked closely with a nutritionist who put him on a strict diet to ensure he was at his lightest before shooting.
“The Cut” debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival on Thursday, where Bloom attended the premiere with his fiancée, Katy Perry.
The “Gran Turismo” star mentioned that Perry was “freaked out” after watching the film, as she was emotional during the screening.
“She found it really moving,” Bloom commented. “She understood the effort it required.”
Bloom, who shares a daughter, Daisy Dove, with Perry, reflected on how his family supported him throughout the challenging filming process, recalling, “I genuinely thought I might die on one visit home during shooting.”
Fortunately, Bloom said Perry was a strong source of support, saying, “She was there with the children and everything.” He also has a son, Flynn, from a previous relationship. “It’s challenging for the family.”
