Raiders set to appoint Pete Carroll, making him the oldest head coach in NFL history, as per reports
Pete Carroll is returning to the NFL sidelines after a brief hiatus and is about to make history.
The Las Vegas Raiders are bringing in the former Seattle Seahawks coach to take over as head coach, according to an ESPN report.
This decision places Carroll, who will be 74 in September, as the oldest head coach in modern NFL history. He will surpass Romeo Crennel, who was 73 years and 199 days old during his final game as interim coach for the Houston Texans. Until now, Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid, who is 66, held the distinction of the league’s oldest active head coach.
After parting ways with the Seahawks last January, Carroll spent this season outside of the NFL. Currently, he is co-teaching a course at the University of Southern California, where he previously coached from 2001 to 2009, achieving two national championships during his tenure.
Carroll interviewed for the Chicago Bears’ head coach position on January 9, which ultimately went to Ben Johnson. He also had discussions with the Dallas Cowboys regarding their coaching vacancy, though no formal meeting occurred, according to multiple sources.
During his 14 years with the Seahawks, Carroll led the team to 10 playoff appearances and secured the franchise’s only Super Bowl victory. He expressed his desire to stay with the team after they finished with a 9-8 record for the second consecutive year in 2023, but the Seahawks chose to move forward instead. They hired Mike Macdonald, making him the NFL’s youngest head coach at age 36.
This hiring marks one of the Raiders’ major changes, coinciding with Tom Brady’s recent involvement as a part-owner of the team since October. Owner Mark Davis mentioned in December that he wanted Brady, a six-time Super Bowl champion and current lead NFL game analyst for Fox, to play a significant role in all football-related matters for the organization.
Earlier this week, the team appointed John Spytek, the assistant general manager of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as their new GM.
The Raiders opted for a major overhaul this offseason, parting ways with head coach Antonio Pierce and general manager Tom Telesco after a disappointing 4-13 season.
Davis has emphasized the importance of finding a young quarterback, with Brady’s assistance, as a key focus for the team this offseason. The Raiders cycled through quarterbacks Gardner Minshew II, Aidan O’Connell, and Desmond Ridder in 2024. They hold the No. 6 overall pick in the draft and are expected to have around $92 million in salary cap space, according to Over The Cap, which is the second-highest projected total in the league.
