Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler to Compete Against Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka in Television Showdown
The ongoing rivalry in golf is set to become a major spectacle.
According to Golfweek, Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler are slated to go head-to-head with Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka in a televised matchup later this year.
This event reveals a showdown between the top talents on the PGA Tour and the prominent figures from LIV Golf, and many view it as a sign of possible improvement in relationships between the two groups.
Scheduled for mid-December in Las Vegas, the match will be broadcast on TNT, which is a part of Warner Brothers Discovery. TNT has previously aired nine installments of The Match, a series that started in 2018 featuring Tiger Woods versus Phil Mickelson. McIlroy, Koepka, and DeChambeau have all participated in various episodes of The Match, but it’s uncertain whether this upcoming contest will be part of that series. Four earlier Matches have taken place in Las Vegas, with three at Wyn Golf Club and one at Shadow Creek.
McIlroy confirmed his participation after being asked by Golfweek.
“I’m excited to join Scottie for what should be an exhilarating match against Bryson and Brooks in Vegas this December,” he stated in a text. “This event is not just about the competition among golf’s major champions; it’s about energizing the fans. We’re all here to put on a fantastic show and foster a goodwill event that brings everyone together once more.”
Representatives for the other players also confirmed their involvement to Golfweek.
“Brooks and Scottie are very excited to take part in this unique event and look forward to sharing more details soon,” said Blake Smith, who represents both Koepka and Scheffler.
Brett Falkoff, DeChambeau’s agent, added: “Bryson is looking forward to competing in Las Vegas this December, and it promises to be a great source of entertainment for fans.”
This special prime-time event is being produced by Bryan Zuriff’s BZ Entertainment, known for creating The Match series, alongside EverWonder Studio, which was established last year by Ian Orefice with backing from RedBird IMI and former CNN executive Jeff Zucker. According to sources, the players will receive an appearance fee but will not compete for any prize money.
The PGA Tour has chosen not to comment on the event. They have been negotiating with the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, which funds LIV, since signing the controversial Framework Agreement about 15 months ago. Earlier this summer, the Tour created a committee for these discussions. McIlroy is one of the players involved on that committee.
In a press gathering at last week’s Tour Championship in Atlanta, commissioner Jay Monahan mentioned that discussions with the PIF are still in progress but declined to share details, emphasizing he would not discuss negotiations publicly. However, Monahan hinted at exciting updates for fans in the future.
He stated, “At the same time, we’re moving forward quickly and focusing on what we can control, as that’s our commitment to our fans.”
Regarding how the Tour and PIF have been prioritizing their discussions, Monahan said they were “actively talking about the future, the vision for future products, and where we can take our sport.”
The upcoming Las Vegas match features a cast of players with complex rivalries. For instance, McIlroy and Koepka were tied at four major wins each until Koepka won his fifth at the 2023 PGA Championship, while DeChambeau narrowly outperformed McIlroy in a dramatic finish at the U.S. Open at Pinehurst in June.
Koepka and DeChambeau also had a very public feud on social media back in 2021, though it appears to have been resolved since they both joined the LIV tour.
On the other hand, Scheffler has firmly established himself as the number one player in the world, achieving seven PGA Tour victories this season, culminating with the FedEx Cup title last weekend, for which he received a $25 million bonus.
