When it comes to playfully taunting fan bases, college football excels — particularly with the involvement of school bands.

During the inaugural ACC game for SMU against Florida State on Saturday, which the Mustangs won decisively 42-16, the SMU Mustang Band seemed to mock FSU by performing a “sad” rendition of their iconic War Chant.

This band performance came while SMU had a comfortable lead of 28-16 with 14:23 left in the game. The Seminoles had narrowed the gap to 12 points late in the third quarter, and a potential touchdown run by Roderick Daniels Jr. was in the works. Initially ruled short, this play became significant during the following replay review.

As if to add to Florida State’s woes, officials later ruled that SMU had indeed scored on that play, pushing their lead to 35-16 after the extra point.

Notably, Florida State’s marching band, the Marching Chiefs, was absent from the game due to travel disruptions caused by Hurricane Helene.

Although FSU and SMU had no previous football rivalry before this matchup, Florida State had opposed the entry of SMU, Stanford, and Cal into the ACC last September.

“We appreciate the efforts of Commissioner Phillips and our conference partners,” said Florida State President Richard McCullough in a statement. “There are multiple complex reasons for our no vote. However, we welcome these exceptional institutions and look forward to collaborating with them as new members of the Atlantic Coast Conference.”

Florida State and Clemson, who also voted against the new additions, are currently embroiled in legal disputes with the ACC.
