Stewart Rhodes, Oath Keepers Founder, Attends Trump Rally in Las Vegas After Prison Release

WASHINGTON ― Stewart Rhodes, the leader of the far-right militia group Oath Keepers, was seen at President Donald Trump’s rally in Las Vegas on Saturday, shortly after his prison sentence related to the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot was commuted this week.

Rhodes, who was freed from prison on Tuesday, joined a group of Trump supporters behind the president as he spoke at the Circa Resort and Casino, reflecting on his first week in office and promising to propose a law aimed at eliminating taxes on tips. Photos from Reuters showed Rhodes in the audience.

Rhodes was sentenced to 18 years in prison for seditious conspiracy in 2022, marking one of the longest sentences given to anyone involved in the Jan. 6 events. He had been serving his time at a federal facility in Cumberland, Maryland, before being released.

On Monday, Trump took significant steps on his first day in office by granting pardons to over 1,500 individuals charged with offenses related to the Jan. 6 incident, which was aimed at halting the certification of his electoral defeat to former President Joe Biden. Along with Rhodes, Trump commuted the sentences of 13 other individuals connected to the extremist groups Oath Keepers and Proud Boys.

Trump has publicly defended his use of executive power to pardon those convicted of violent acts during the Jan. 6 attack, claiming they faced harsher treatment in court compared to “murderers,” which he has stated multiple times.

“This week, I remarked how unreasonable and harsh their sentences were,” Trump stated when questioned about his decisions regarding the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys leaders.

A U.S. District Court Judge, Amit Mehta, issued an order for Rhodes to refrain from approaching the Capitol following his release. However, the Justice Department under Trump opposed this ruling, contending that the judge did not possess the authority to impose such a restriction.
