What is TGL, the new golf initiative from Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy?

After being postponed for a year, TGL, the virtual and interactive golf league established by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, is set to officially launch this Tuesday.

TGL kicks off at a state-of-the-art interactive golf facility located near the homes of Woods and McIlroy. The SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, features an enormous golf simulator screen along with a flexible green that can be customized for a variety of competitive holes.

The center was initially scheduled to open last year; however, a roof collapse occurred in November 2023 due to a power failure and windstorm.

What is TGL?

TGL, which stands for TMRW Golf League, derives its name from TMRW Sports, the organization founded by Woods, McIlroy, and Mike McCarley to launch this league and other related initiatives.

This innovative golf league blends advanced technology with live competition and is a collaboration with the PGA Tour. Features will include a shot clock, timeouts, as well as both individual and team match play formats.

The inaugural season will consist of six teams, each comprising four players.

How does TGL function?

TGL hosts competitions where two teams of three players compete in a combination of simulator and traditional golf. Players will tee off from a mat towards a 64-by-53-foot screen, with fairway, rough, and sand surface options available. Once the ball lands about 50 yards from the hole, they will move onto the “Green Zone,” which is a 3,800-square-foot green adaptable to different hole setups.

The teams will play nine holes of 3-on-3 alternate shot golf. Each player will also engage in two holes of head-to-head match play, with each hole worth one point. If there’s a tie, the match advances to an overtime closest-to-the-pin contest, continuing until one team secures two closest shots.

How to view TGL matches

Fans can watch selected matches weekly on ESPN, with additional streaming available through ESPN+.

TGL scoring system

A point-based scoring format will determine which four teams qualify for the playoffs at the end of the regular season:

  • Win: 2 points
  • Overtime loss: 1 point
  • Regulation loss: 0 points

In the event of a tie for playoff positioning, the team with the highest number of wins across holes throughout the season will take precedence.
