The Shower Frequency Dilemma: How Often Should You Really Clean Up?

Tommy Lee showers once a week, admits wife Brittany Furlan. But how often should you shower?

Rock star Tommy Lee is clean and tidy, according to his wife Brittany Furlan, but he’s not particularly obsessed with hygiene.

During an episode of the “Off the Vine with Kaitlyn Bristowe” podcast on Thursday, Furlan shared that Lee, 62, “showers about once a week.”

“People might be surprised that my husband is very neat considering he’s a musician,” she noted. “They would think he’s chaotic and messy, but he keeps things tidy. He doesn’t shower frequently, but he values being clean.” She went on to explain that Lee mentioned it’s a cultural thing in Europe where some people don’t shower daily; they use a wet washcloth instead when they feel a bit dirty.

Lee isn’t the only celebrity whose bathing practices have sparked discussions. In 2021, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis stirred up controversy on Dax Shepard’s “Armchair Expert” podcast when they disclosed that they don’t wash their bodies every day with soap.

So, the question arises: Is it necessary to shower every day? Or can you adopt a rockstar routine like Tommy Lee’s and bathe just once a week? Here’s the guidance.

Is daily showering recommended?

The general advice is a resounding yes.

We consulted with experts, including Michelle Henry, MD, a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, Breanna Brown, an esthetician from Ella Esthetics, and Corey L. Hartman, MD, FAAD, founder of Skin Wellness Dermatology in Birmingham, Alabama. All of them previously told YSL News that adults should indeed shower every day.

“If you go too long between showers, it can lead to accumulation of dirt, oils, debris, and bacteria which can trigger inflammation,” Henry noted. “Failing to wash off these unwanted bacteria can worsen conditions like eczema, while oils and dirt can clog pores contributing to acne and folliculitis.”

As your body matures through puberty, it produces sweat that bacteria thrive on, resulting in body odor; hence, Henry advocates for daily bathing for adults.

“If you aren’t sweating much or if you spend a lot of time at home, you might not feel particularly greasy. Also, if you don’t think your body odor is too strong, it’s ultimately your personal choice whether you shower every day,” Henry explained.

Brown emphasized that if you’re going out, a shower each day is definitely important, preferably in the evening.

Can daily showers dry out your skin?

If you follow a proper regimen of showering and moisturizing, washing daily shouldn’t leave your skin feeling dry.

“Although excessive washing can indeed cause dry, irritated, and itchy skin, using a good emollient cream can help restore moisture,” Hartman remarked.

Henry suggested using lukewarm water and gentle cleansers to maintain the skin’s pH balance.

Henry advised “cleansing for a limited time so that we don’t dry out the skin, selecting the right cleanser, and ensuring you moisturize to replenish the necessary ceramides, oils, and lipids for maintaining skin health and function.”
