Philadelphia Union reports the passing of goalkeeper Holden Trent, aged 25.

The Philadelphia Union has revealed the sad news that goalkeeper Holden Trent passed away on Saturday at the age of 25.

While the exact cause of death has not been disclosed, it was mentioned by Trent’s family that he had been in an intensive care unit recently, as shared on his Instagram account earlier this week.

“Holden left us this afternoon while surrounded by family and friends,” his family stated on Saturday. “We appreciate the outpouring of love and support that you all have shown for Holden. Details regarding services and a celebration of his life will be shared soon.”

Born on July 7, 1999, Trent attended Page High School in Greensboro, North Carolina.

He was chosen 28th overall in the 2023 MLS Super Draft by the Union, having played for High Point University where he earned the title of Big South Goalkeeper of the Year in both 2021 and 2022.

“The Major League Soccer community is deeply saddened by the untimely death of Union goalkeeper Holden Trent. He was a talented young player with a promising future, demonstrating dedication and professionalism every day as part of Philadelphia’s close-knit goalkeeping team,” the league expressed in a statement.

“We send our heartfelt condolences to his fiancée, family, friends, teammates, and the entire Philadelphia Union family. MLS is working with the club to ensure that players and family members receive the necessary resources and support during this heartbreaking period.”

The Union also issued their own statement:

“The Philadelphia Union is heartbroken by the loss of Holden Trent. He was not only an exceptional athlete and fierce competitor but also a loving son, brother, fiancé, and teammate who enriched the lives of those around him. He exemplified the essence of determination, dedication, and resilience and will be profoundly missed. We extend our sincerest sympathies to his family, fiancé, and friends,” the statement read.

“Out of respect for Holden’s loved ones, we will not provide further comments at this moment and kindly ask for privacy as they mourn.”
