Jeff Baena’s Cause of Death Confirmed
The cause of death for Jeff Baena, the filmmaker who was married to Aubrey Plaza, has been revealed.
According to records from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner obtained by YSL News, Baena died by suicide at the age of 47.
Baena passed away on Friday at his residence in California, as previous records indicated.
He was recognized for his work on films such as “Life After Beth,” “The Little Hours,” and “Horse Girl.” He also co-wrote “I Heart Huckabees,” directed by David O. Russell. His latest film, “Spin Me Round,” released in 2022, starred Plaza alongside Alison Brie. Plaza appeared in both “Life After Beth” and “The Little Hours.”
Baena and Plaza tied the knot in 2020 after dating since 2010. As mentioned in a GQ profile of Plaza from 2022, they met while playing a game of Balderdash.
In a 2021 interview with Ellen DeGeneres, the “Parks and Recreation” actress shared that during the COVID-19 lockdown, they decided to get married online after feeling “a little bored one night.”
“I suggested we should celebrate our 10-year anniversary with something special, like getting an ice cream cone,” she recounted. “Then, I jokingly mentioned getting married, and he replied, ‘Well, we probably couldn’t get married that quickly.’ I said, ‘It would be nice to wed on our actual anniversary,’ so I looked it up and found onehourmarriage.com.”
Since the news of Baena’s passing, tributes and condolences for Plaza have been shared widely. During the Golden Globes, director Brady Corbet mentioned both Plaza and Baena while accepting the best director award.
“My heart is with Aubrey Plaza and Jeff’s family tonight,” he expressed in his speech.
On Instagram, Brie shared, “Rest in peace, my friend,” while Molly Shannon, who participated in many of Baena’s films, posted photos with him and a broken heart emoji. Adam Pally also expressed, “My heart aches for my friend Aubrey and for the Baena family, as well as for everyone who spent time on his sets or at his home.”
Many other celebrities also offered their support to Plaza on Instagram.
Selma Blair commented on Plaza’s latest Instagram post, “Words can’t capture this painful moment. Only love, strength, and support from everyone. I’m so sorry.”
