Tragic Toll: Floods and Landslides Claim Lives in the Philippines Amid Tropical Storm

MANILA, Philippines — On Monday, a series of floods and a landslide resulted in the deaths of at least seven individuals in the Philippines as Tropical Storm Yagi, known locally as Enteng, unleashed heavy rainfall over Manila and surrounding areas, according to a representative from the disaster management agency.

In a mountainous region of Antipolo, located east of Manila, three people lost their lives, including two young boys and a 27-year-old expectant mother, after a landslide struck their homes, stated Relly Bernardo, the disaster management chief of the city.

“This area is prone to landslides, and we have been urging residents to evacuate for quite some time, offering alternative housing,” he shared with DWPM radio.

Bernardo also noted that four other fatalities occurred due to drowning incidents in the same province, Rizal, where many houses were overwhelmed by floodwaters.

Each year, the Philippines experiences an average of 20 tropical storms, many of which are typhoons, with landslides ranking among the leading causes of fatalities.

On Monday, intense rains submerged streets and residences in various parts of the country, causing government operations and classes to be suspended.

Tropical Storm Yagi produced winds traveling at 53 mph, with gusts reaching up to 65 mph as it progressed northwest across Luzon, the most populous and largest island in the Philippines.

“Water was rushing here, and on the opposite side of our street, the water level was almost reaching the roofs of the homes,” said Gloria Nicolas, a local resident in Rizal province.

“Some residents found themselves trapped and had to escape by climbing onto the roofs of houses.”
