Hurricane Milton Causes Damage to the Roof of the Tampa Bay Rays’ Tropicana Field
On Wednesday night, Hurricane Milton struck the Tampa Bay region with strong winds and torrential rain. A weather sensor located on Anna Maria Island reported sustained winds of 84 mph, with gusts reaching up to 106 mph at around 10 p.m. ET, according to Tyler Fleming, a meteorologist with the Tampa Bay weather service.
The powerful winds resulted in damage to the roof of Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, which is the home ground of the MLB’s Tampa Bay Rays. Authorities repurposed the stadium into a base camp for emergency personnel and set up rows of green cots for them.
This week, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced the stadium would accommodate up to 10,000 people for debris cleanup and support for first responders. Local news footage and social media posts captured images of a section of the stadium’s roof ripped away by the fierce winds.
According to St. Petersburg Fire Rescue, communication with individuals inside the stadium confirmed they were unharmed. Reports from WFTS-TV indicated that there were no injuries reported.
